I don't want to mess up my 4 wheel drive!

Hey guys, I got a 98 SR5, 5 speed manual. Oregon is getting nasty and I havent used my 4 wheel drive yet or any 4wheel drive with a manual for that matter. Can anyone give this yota idiot a tutorial on how to use my manual 4wd? I would like to know how fast I can shift in to low/hi, if i need to stop to engage, and all the other necessary stuff that all you toyota geniuses dont even think twice about. Thanks!

First off this is not the right place for this post, this is the for sale section.

That said now walk out to your Truck flip down the visor and read the instructions on how to engage your 4wheel drive. Its been awhile since I owned my manual 99 4runner, but if I remember correctly you can shift safely in and out of 4 wheel drive while keeping it under something like 30 mph and in a certain rpm range. That is of course if you have the auto hubs, othewise you will need to get out and lock in for them to engage which can be done from a dead stop. For the auto the tire will need to rotate to lock in.

What's the manual say?

 

I have a manual 1st gen and have shifted from 2hi to 4hi at about 40mph on icy roads, it locked right in with little noise. Thats about the fastest i've engaged it, I don't see any need to haul butt in icy conditions anyway.

 

Going from 4hi to 4low you are supposed to be stopped I think. My truck says under 60mph you can go from 2hi to 4hi. However, I have the push button 4hi.

4hi can be engaged at speed, 4lo at a stop and in neutral

don't engage 4wd on pavement unless making minimal turns to prevent binding and damage to your tranny

I dont believe so, I dont have to get out of the truck to engage 4 wheel if thats what your asking.

 

Like others have said, 2hi to 4hi can be done at speed. I've done it up to 50mph without any clunking or binding noises. Another piece of advice is to keep your wheels straight when going into 4hi. Sometimes when I have my wheels turned it clunks a bit. Shifting to 4low must be done at a complete stop with the transmission in neutral. Other than that it's pretty simple. Just don't use it on dry pavement unless you're only going in a straight line and not turning the wheels.
