i have a 01-04 4x4 TRD SR5 with a 6" Fabtec lift and 35" tires, since my suspension upgrade and tires upgrade my MPG has dropped horrificly, and i'm losing power on long hills. i still want to be able to hit a mud hole and traverse the local mountain trails, so what gearing should i be looking for?

IMO - mine's a DD and on Weekends i play, if i was 6" on 35s which is what i was going to do, i'd go with 4:88.
Some will say 5:29 but unless it's a Toy Rig only i'd stray from that.

You can use the Tire Calculator at the very bottom of this page to helo you out, or the gimjeeper calculator.

^ 4.88 as the others have said

should net you near that of oem rpm when accounting for 35's
    well, that's if it's the 5vz !?

If it's a dedicated off road rig requiring lower gearing...
purchase and install a crawler box

    * 4.88's are a stronger gear then 5.29's

    just sayin'

4.88s should be perfect with 35s, I went to 5.29s with the 37s I run now and that is perfect, feels nearly like stock as far as shift points and driveability- 1,500-2000 rpms at 75-80 mph no problem. Def want to regear with anything over a 35 for sure.

yeah, alot of my buddies were talking about 5.29's... but the 4.88's seem to be the unanamous answer... just wondering how you fit 37's on yours? did you do body lift as well?

If your buddies are into older Toyota's 5.29's would be correct for a truck that originally came with 4.10's pre-95. But remember they also had like 28" tall tires stock. I ran 5.29's with 35" tires on an 86 4Runner 20 years ago and it was about perfect. But for a Tacoma that had 4.10's with 31" tires stock I would agree 4.88's would be a much better choice. FWIW I had 2 V6 5 speed tacomas with 4" pro comp lifts and 33" tires back in the late 90's and they were fine with stock 4.10's both on the road and off road. I averaged about 17MPG with both. But 35's are a bit of a jump.

6" FabTech suspension 3" body lift, 35x12.50R15 BFG AT T/A KO tires, Mickey Thompson Sidebiter wheels, 4:88 front and rear gears, e-locker, "grey wire mod," Hella driving lights retroed to 55w 8000K HIDs, custom grill, Downey chrome air intake w/ AEM filter, AirAid throttle body spacer, Flowmaster exhaust, Alpine audio w/ 12" RF sub, racing bucket seats, black powdercoated toolbox, smoked out black taillights, black headlamps and corners, red LED interior lights, sway bar removed, rear shock relocation, u-bolt flip mod, 01 center console, Relentless Fab front plate bumper, LED fog lights.
Hey! Nice lookin' truck! I'm in about the same boat as you; 6" FabTech lift, 3" BL, rolling 35x12.50R15's, intake, throttle body spacer, Flowmaster exhaust, etc. I re-geared to the 4:88's which I have found to be pretty much perfect to get the stock feeling back! I hope to get my hands on a s/c to see how much more that will help, too! ;) An old friend of mine wants to put his back to stock, so we might end up putting his back to stock and putting the s/c on mine + some cash for it, of course! But good luck with the re-gear, and keep wrenchin!!!

    What transmission do you have?

    I have an '03 regular cab pre-runner w/ 2.7 & auto trans. I am running 33's and have a 5.29 geared ARB.

On the freeway @ 70 mph, I'm turning 2750-0800 rpm's. My fuel mileage is 18-20 on the freeway which I'm happy with.

    Later.

Yeah 6 inch suspension and 3 inch body. Like I said with the 37s the 5.29s are just about perfect for my needs. I drive on the highway a lot and can still pull close to 20 mpg w the 2.7 and it has good power. Good luck.

nice, i appreciate the info and assistance. if you wouldn't mind to much sending a picture of your truck, i'd like to see what another 3" would look like. i've been thinking of a body lift but, unsure of how much to go.
