Snapped an axle shaft today...pics!!

Driving along on the highway with my tool box in the back (incredibly heavy) i was almost on the bump stops hit a small bump in road and SNAP!! tire rolled passed me and i pulled off the shoulder on 3 wheels. i have 4.88s and 33s

Any ideas? how can i make sure the axle housing isn't bent? any ideas on new parts? i know for sure im going with trail gear 4340 chromoly shafts so this never happens again, but as far as everything else still looking for parts.

That's a good question. I didn't even notice until you asked. Overload maybe?, like airbags but springs instead?

 

That really sux. Love the blacked out Taco... Hope you get it back on the road soon.

 

google "ZUK mod" its an old pickup/4runner mod, figured i would try it on the taco and i really like it when compared to the 3" blocks i used to have.

 

I think people just put them there for added payload for carrying heavy loads and what not

but then... I don't overload muh junk neither

so it's prolly that, which brought it's early demise

 

This sucks, when my shaft snapped, I was lucky it didn't roll out like thiS. I don't know how it didn't but I drove around on with my locker until I got the money to buy a new shaft. I went with the stock one again to retain ABS functionality. That was stupid. ABS stopped working a year later now I'm $800 poorer and I don't have moly shafts. :'( Just buy a set of D44 front and rear and go to town

 

nope no weird noises, and yeah i overloaded my shit that was the fault. thats why i going with the aftermarket axle shafts

Where did it break, the shaft shouldn't have came out unless it broke near/at the wheel bearing and retainer. That's odd for a shaft to break, while your at it I'd upgrade to chromoly.

 

Those shafts are pretty strong, I think there was some sort of defect. Not likely you had it overloaded enough to shear that shaft even hitting a bump unless you hit a massive pot hole -- even then :/. You also must have sheared it before the bearing (between hub and bearing), also looks that way in the pics. If you sheared it inside the axle tube, passed the bearing and collar I don't think you'd lose your wheel. Post pictures of the broken ends.

Jberry bent his housing and broke a sidegear without any problems with the shafts. I think either defective shaft or...?
