ok....in my researching, reading stickies and from what i've gathered...
i have seen where we have 4.5" backspacing on our OEM wheels for our
1st gen 01-04 trucks. Currently I have a 1.5" spacer on these wheels.
I want to get rid of the spacers and get new wheels. I have found wheels
that i like but the backspacing is only 4.25"....on that wheel (16x8),
if i ran 285 size COOPER SST tires....

I would probably be rubbing the UCA/calipers????...
and I do NOT want to run the spacers, my wheel/tire would not come out as far
as with the 1.5" spacer right????
anybody have any experience with that setup????...

to me, i think it would be rubbing and need grinding and/or spacers,
so i'm looking for anybody who may be familiar to comment/verify my thinking.

wheels with 4.25" BS and 285 sizes tires fit on our 1st gen trucks???.....
please advise so i can avoid buying the wrong wheels
    Thx guys

Some of this Some of that
Uhh, I don't know about the size tire you want fitting or not but I can tell you that 4.25 bs is less than 4.5. And will cause the wheel to stick out more.

    for a 285...

    I recommend 4.0 - 3.75 BS'ing
    using 16 X 8 wheels

I personally would go with 3.75"

With 4.0" BS there can be slight frame rub
    at full steering lock.

    * be sure the center chunk offset is correct to clear the brake calipers

You will be fine with 4.25" BS

This is our F-5, 16x8 w/4.5" BS. Tires are 285/75/16. I've aired down to 15psi and they still clear the UCA. It does rub the frame at full lock, but it's nothing major or something to worry about.

fine, is not even close to good IMO
If I rub with 285's at 4.0"... you must rub plenty more.

If you followed me... you'll wish you'd have gone 4.0" BS minimally.
I often air down to 6-8 psi

Steering lock/frame rub can be minimal to excruciating...
dependent of what sidewall tread the tires have
having a lesser backspacing just makes it worse.

    on road... wgasa

    off road... every millimeter counts.

I stand on what I know from my experience.

But if the OP wants to accept your advice...
there will be no tears in muh beer.
