So, lately I have noticed a smell when I get out of my truck after driving. To me, it smells like a clutch burning so I looked everywhere on the forum and the Taco is not acting like others describe. (no slipping, at all.) Mechanically, the truck still runs like the first day I got her, like a spotted ape. I read one post about the breaks being the culprit. I guess my question is, how do I tell if it's the clutch or the brakes? Any insight would be great and thanks in advance.

Does your steering wheel pull one direction or the other when braking?

It could be a frozen piston on your brake caliper. My 1997 Tacoma had a piston freeze one time and during braking the steering wheel would pull distinctly one direction.

If your driving it hard this is normal. I'm not very nice to my clutch...

My truck has the same smell. It would make sense if it were brakes I guess because when I am just going down the road my truck goes straight. When i brake my truck turns left, I mean you have to be ready for it. So I will be interested to see what you come up with :)

if your truck pulls left when you brake, then there is a problem. most likely a sticking or stuck piston in your left caliper. it will cause premature wear on pads and rotors if you don't fix it.

My experience has been one of two scenarios:

    1) A piston is froze in an extended state which means the steering wheel will constantly pull that direction.

    or

    2) A piston is froze in a retracted position, and when braking the wheel will pull away from the caliper with said frozen piston.
