I bought my 02 Tacoma with about 103K miles and changed the AT fluid with Castrol. I also removed the AT fluid pan and cleaned it along with the AT fluid filter. I sprayed the pan and filter screen with brake fluid as recommended by a Toyota Service Dept rep. Running great since then.

I'm getting close to the 175K mark. Should I change the AT fluid? The reason I ask is b/c a friend of mine bought a 02 Dodge Ram with about 180K miles on it and we changed the AT fluid. After that the transmission broke. :(

    Too few to list.
    Two things.
    1) it's a dodge.
    2) with lack of service, the tranny gets used to working with the sludge/dirty oil then suddenly you replace it with clean oil and it breaks.

Always change your fluids and filters on a regular basis.

Your buddies Dodge was on it's way to TU, the oil change didn't break the tranny.

I bought an 01 Taco in 2004 with 62k miles. The tranny went at 140k. I had it rebuilt. Now I have 290k on it and realized I haven't changed the ATF. I asked the guys at my local shop and they said do not change it--they said nothing good would come of it. Not sure what to do, either...
