Ideas on my tire gate hinge?

Well figured it's been a year since i built my tire gate and that i need to finally hinge it. especially with a big camping trip coming up to Land Between the Lakes.

for those who don't know, this is my current tire gate:

i'd like to be able to switch opening sides if need be, but for the most part one side would be bolted and one side would use pull pins. such as

    Tiregateproject018_886423d8a8124e9b72c528a15186ed41dbc2388d.jpg

from all the tire gate builds i've seen, they really aren't running bigger than 33" tires. i'll have a 37" tire sitting back there so i may need a little more strength.
it looks as though alot just use a simple sleeve around a poly bushing but i don't see how that doesn't sag when opened.
then there's double shear hinges. the ones comp4x4 sells(link) seem perfect but their smallest measures out to 4.5" which IMO seems too big for this. i've never seen one in person but 3" seems to be perfect per hinge. also comp4x4 is $50 each.. $200 in hinges also seems too high.

anyone want to share their input on this?

Here's a couple options for you.

This one would be good since it uses brass bushings. It says it's out of stock but I bet if you called these guys they could send you just the sleeve and bushing without the bracket.
    http://www.comp4x4.com/Tire-Carrier-Hinge-Kit-With-Dual-Shear-Bracket-Universal-mount.html

Edit: sorry just noticed you already mentioned the comp4x4 ones. they are cool guys and I think they would cut you a sleeve at 3" if you called and asked. The brass bushings themselves are probably only 1" tall. I'm using two of those hinges for my bumper swingouts.

This would work fine too I think. Uses poly bushings but the bushing is sleeved. Personally I'd pick up 4 of these and call it good.

you think the poly bushing approach would be strong enough and not sag when opened though? that's my only worry with poly. but that price is much more reasonable

If you are using two per side I think it will be fine. that's what "official" tire gates use.

    flux core welds!

to stop the bed from bowing i added a plate from the swing arm base to my bumper and welded it. the gate only drops about an inch once opened but i believe it's from the bushings. it swings nice though so i'm not going to worry about it.

Looks great! I'd love to have a tire gate like that!

I like how you mounted your rear license plate, my rear plate is also mounted with a few zipties :anonymous: lol

    ^thanks!

it was so much easier to load/unload all the camping gear. i just can't believe i waited a year to get around to doing this.

although i should it currently isn't switchable to which side opens. i was dumb and made a miscalculation. the pass side could be made to open but the receiver would need to be notched. i seen myself using the driver side more anyways which i why i made only that side work the way i wanted.

Turned out pretty good Cody. Doesn't surprise me that it's got a slight droop when open. There's a decent amount of weight on that thing with the 37" spare and a lot of leverage with how wide it is. You might be getting a little deformation of the bushings but I would suspect that the bed is actually flexing some too. I wouldn't worry about the bushings though, they take way more abuse in things like suspension.

    Good job.

    thank ya thank ya.

Adam the bed barely flexes anymore, luckily. before that bracing plate i was afraid just from the testing and measuring and whatnot that it was going to snap off where i bobbed it. thanks for your suggestion on those bushings! for the time being they are holding up only a 33" but as you said it's still a great amount of weight. i may bend down the opening of the receivers to create more of a ramp to help guide it in but it works great!

If you end up wanting to switch to brass let me know, I've got shop time on some CNC lathes since I'm done with class and could hack some out for you.
