I fit a forward facing car seat in the back of my tacoma all the time. Im not sure about a rear facing, however.

There's legs that fold out in mine, that hold the car seat upright. Its behind the passenger side seat. I've had two car seats in it before, one on each side, but I had to find something to prop the seat up on the drivers side. My three year old cousin fits back there fine, but I had to move the seat up a little.

i just had my niece in the back of mine tonight, and it fit, but unless you like driving like an old lady with your chest on the steering wheel id look into a double cad.

I have a front facing seat in the back of my 2000 ext. cab. It goes on the passenger side. There is a drink holder that flips up to support the base. I have tried a rear facing seat, but it was too long. The front seat had to be all the way forward.

A few times I needed to take my kid in the truck a very short distance with the rear facing seat, I put it on the front passenger seat and turned offf the air bag. I did this only to drive her 3 mi to daycare on residential streets (25-35 mph speed limits).

Even with a front facing seat, it needs to have a back that is somewhat upright. We have one front facing seat that has some recline to it that doesn't fit as well. I use a Costco seat that I got at Target for ~$40. It fits well and is rated for something like 20-50 lbs.

I own a 2002 extended cab, 4x4. I have twin boys (15 months). Is it possible to fit 2 car seats in the back? How safe is it though?

I had this same question re: my 1999 Tacoma extended cab. As of this morning, I can confirm that a 2021 Uppababy Mesa carseat base + 2021 Mesa carseat DO fit, rear-facing, in the rear passenger-side fold-down seat. There are general guidelines in the Tacoma owner's manual, and details for that seat/base on the Uppababy website, including a video. You fold up the padded seat in the back and fold out the cupholder platform for additional support. You use the 3-point seatbelt method (no clips, no 2-point belt) and follow the manufacturer directions and it works well. The base is tight and doesn't wiggle side to side or forward and back. A caveat: with the base installed and the carseat attached, the front passenger seat is slid all the way forward and I have to muscle the seatback into the first click to hold it upright (as opposed to flopped all the way forward). So, it would be VERY uncomfortable and potentially impossible for someone to sit in the front passenger seat while the carseat is behind it. Still useful to put the carseat back there though, for single-parent trips with baby and the front seat can still accommodate groceries, diaper bag, etc. (just not a person). I was fearful that I'd need to get a new car but I love my Tacoma dearly and it's a relief to find that it fits. I hope this is helpful to anyone with c. 2021 carseats (specific sizes/shapes of different brands' carseats and bases will vary, of course).
