I am looking at buying a 2001 Tacoma with the 3.4 V6 in it. It has 85,000 miles on it. I've been reading that the timing belt should be changed at 90,000 miles. Does anyone know the ballpark cost to fix by a mechanic. Also just looking for some insight from other owners with timing belts if it is absolutely necessary to change right at 90,000 and other fixes or problems if any that other owners have seen or dealt with. Thanks a lot.

I just had mine done recently but I have more than double your mileage. It cost me about 550 which included the water pump and other belts.

i did my 02 and it had 220k on it. parts were around 300 and i did the install myself. i would not worry to much about your truck, 85k is still in the break in stage!

Some of this Some of that
T belt Interval on newer Toyotas is 90k. Interval on that truck is 60k. It's a non interference engine so if the bel breaks its nbd. It's a good idea to get the water pump, tensioner and idler pulleys replaced too

Ok, thanks. I haven't bought it yet just wondering what the cost would be since they would need to be replaced right after I bought it. tlh178 was that the original belt that lasted that long or was it replaced once before. Thanks

Ok thanks. Just wondering because I don't really feel like forkin out another $600-700 right after I buy it. I have a 2000 2.7 4 banger and love it. Want to buy a V6 manual and not sure to buy a 1st generation or get a 2nd generation any input would be great.

Age can play a factor as well since it is rubber. That sounds like a good low-mileage truck, though, so I wouldn't worry too much about it. It will probably be fine to 120K, but I personally wouldn't go further than that.

You can get a whole kit with all the parts needed, including water pump. It's not hard. If you can do a brake job, you can probably do this job.

Bought my '02 last year 25K on it. The previous owner had to have the water pump replaced at 17K miles and while they were at it they replaced the timing belt. I'll be turning over 60K very soon so I have a little cushion.

Chris, what the hell? We both have 2001s? The one in my glove box and the one dowloaded from Toyota say 90k. :notsure: Where exactly are you seeing 60k?
