Water leak

Ok i know the is an SIB on this topic but i made an attempt to do it and had NO luck.
I have a water leak that comes from the passenger side under the floor mat. It is NOT the heater core it only happens when it rains, and worse when i park on an up hill and not as bad on down hill. I tried the bulletin i siliconed the pinch welds on the cowl no luck, but i haven't tried the part where you take the fender off and silicone somthing in there.
i just want to know has anyone done this and what is the real problem i just don't want to silicon everything i want to know what causes this leak.

It could also be leaking from the door (insufficiently sealed moisture barrier behind the door panel). This is the 3rd step / option in the TSB procedure. Have you checked behind the door panel (or at least done the leak test described in the TSB)?

 

Its not the vapor barrier i know that for sure.

Mine was doing the same thing, it was the rubber gromit-spelling? on the passenger side firewall. When it rains the water runs down right on it. I sprayed some of that foam that expands and dries hard, can't remember the name of it but I know it's used for sealing around house windows and stuff. It works great and no more leak.

also the bottom seal of the winshield, Ive seen those leak into the cab

 

i have the same spot but its on the drivers side....i noticed the soured smell when i got the truck....i thought i had it fixed over the summer but its back again....i have no clue what it is

 

what grommet did u seal? was it the where the AC lines go into the cab?

Update: i pulled carpet back and the foam insulation between the heater box and the fire wall is soaked and when i pulled out the ac grommet i think i could see the same kind of insulation.

 

This may be way off but i have a double cab and mine was doing the same thing and I had 2 rubber plugs on each side of the back of the cab ( in between the bed and the cab) It seems weird but when it would rain hard my front carpet would get wet also. But I would guess you have a rubber plug missing some where

 

well i sealed the big grommet on the far left (passenger side) of the engine bay and both a/c lines grommet. and of course it hasn't rained since.

 

DAMMMMNNNN... still leaking

 

Got hardcore on it today, pulled off the fender and ran a bead of silicone along the body seam, siliconed every grommet on the passenger side and ran a small bead under the windshield.
now we play the waiting game

I just started the process of finding my 04 PreRunner leak.

Passenger side carpet is wet a lot. I only noticed it when I pulled out the factory mats to vacuum. There was moisture/condensation on the under side (black rubber area).

With the hose simulating some decent rain, the only leak I have pinpointed so far was due to the improperly sealed maoisture barrier behind the passenger side door panel.

I pressed the existing clean plastic moisture barrier into the existing black glue/tar. I then covered all edges of the barrier with duct tape.

My subsequent test shows a few drops on top of the weather stripping...so i guess I missed a spot somewhere...or the duct tape didn't seal it.
More testing tomorrow after work.

I am not convinced that this in my only leak....as the carpet padding was/is wet nearer to the console and close to the seat. The leak that I found with the door caused water to run over the weatherstripping and into the narrow groove that runs along the door where the wiring harnesses run. It then puddled under the jack storage carpet. (I was parked uphill in the driveway).
Guess I'll test with it sitting level too.

 

Between Target and O'Reilly's Auto, I picked up some 3mil drop cloth plastic and some black silicon Windshield Sealer and a door panel tool (beats the gasaket scraper i used yesterday).

I'll pull the door panels (both) tonight and make new moisture barriers.
With a nice wide and seamless bead of windshield sealer and new plastic, I hope to stop the rain from pouring in (literally) behind the door panel and into the floor.

Still not convinced this is my only leak source. (see previous post).

Tried to get some seam sealer at O'Reilly's, but they did not have any.

I may have some stashed away at home from an old Dodge A100 van I had years ago.

 

Mine was leaking due to the AC water drop area that drips water from the ac under the car was clogged. Thus it caused the water to leak into the floor areas of the cab when I went around corners sharp etc.

 

Ok man so I also have a first generation and I had the same problem, exact same spot and everything. You will never even guess where the leak is coming from! After spending 2 or 3 hours with my dad just spraying water we figured out that the leak is coming from the welded areas.

If you open your hood and stand on the passenger side of the car looking into the hood, you will c where the firewall meets what appears to be the cut out for the wheels! IF you just silicon there then the leaking will stop, but you have to silicon the netire thing with sometype of silicon that will be able to sustain the heat! I can take pictures for you tom and show you where I am talking about since I am not very (truck term savey) and I can find out what type of silicon to use! I figured out my problem 2 months ago and my truck has not leaked since!

 

I can't see any water from the a/c hose area at all.
The evaporator hose pours water out the bottom (as intended) so it doesn't appear to be stopped up.
The tops of the mats are dry, just the metal floor pan and pad.
The moisture seems to condensate on the under side of the factory mats.

I have a rock chip in my windshield so i may have it replaced instead of repaired to see if that helps (in case it is a windshield seal issue).

Next will be using the hose and checking body seams as TarHeelFan described above.

With so many seams.... that will be a tedious process.

check the TSIB where the fender meets the cab is a little gap. and the water runs down the side and doesnt normally get the top of the carpet wet. i pulled the fender off and siliconed the gap, im not sure if that was the hole that caused it i siliconed the whole firewall on that side also check the gromet on the floor pan on that side.

 

Ok - well somewhere on the internet, I read that windshield rtv sealant could be used to adhere the moisture barrier to the door.

WRONG

Just after using the windshield sealant/rtv to put on the new poly barrier, I spoke to my QA contact at Toyota manufacturing... he doubted that it would adhere to the poly and boy was he right. When pulled the door panel back off to check adhesion, the plastic was already nearly falling off. It was barely sticking and pulled off with minimial effort.

He suggested that I get some 3M Butyl Strip Calk (item number 08578).
It comes in small 12" strips (60 per box) for approx $12.00 at the local body shop supply house.

So - I spent several hours scraping off the RTV. It did NOT stick to the poly, but stuck like he77 to the door. I used a nylon scraper and got as much off as I could. FYI Permatex Gasket Remover does not work on RTV.

I wanted to get as much off as possible, because even after a week, the RTV smell was still horrible in the truck. Especially after closing it up for the night.

I got most of it off... and then put on the Butyl tape in the original location. (Mineral spirits takes off the factory stuff once you scrape most of it off). (Wear gloves!)

So, I put on another new moisture barrier with the butyl calk. When it rais again, I'll update the success/failure of my efforts.
(It was too late and daylight had gone so I didn't test)

I still expect that I also have a body seam leaking, but time will tell.
