Seen it before on Jeeps, but I'm starting a project for my lathe class and I'm going to be turning down a knob with a compass in it out of aluminum.

The knob will look like this...

    And the compass...

I'll have machine time tomorrow and have stock for 2 but I can always get more.

    $75 inc. continental shipping.

I'll post pictures of the finished product when I get it cut and assembled.

If you think you want one let me know and I'll get material and once it's done I can start sending them out.

I really like that idea actually and might go do this myself. Where did you get that compass (and what diameter is it?) Also any chance you can send me the solidworks file? I may have a few more things to machine next week now...

Isn't a compasses' accuracy affected by the electromagnetic radiation from the vehicle as well as all the metal content?

Unless of course you're strictly going for fashion over function.

Find a picture of a handle you like and I'll see what I can do, if it's general interest then sure, why not!

And I knew I was going to get that response... Everyone was looking at me weird when I was making the CAD file and then I put in in context and it was an "Ohhhhhhhhh ;)" moment

Most of that cost is from materials; 2" bar stock ain't cheap and even still, around 60% is made into very pretty curls.

On top of that I have to pay for machine time/tooling for outside projects so it adds up quickly.

If there's enough interest to justify buying 10+ feet of material (20+ knobs) the price goes WAAAY down but even at this price, I'm not making much on this project as is.

The compass is 1.89" in diameter, it's actually out of an assembly that I had to buy about 5 different models to finally find the one that I want as it isn't listed in any product details.

If you PM me we can work something out (AKA so long as you don't start competing), I don't much like the idea of giving my work away for free :p

It's a standard ball compass so it's going to move around a little bit when driving anyways. Once it's cut out I'll have a video made of it on road.

And Aluminum isn't magnetic so that won't pull the compass ;) and when holding it in your hand in a car it doesn't pull so it doesn't seem to be that big of a deal.

It's form and function in this case!

I think it looks awesome, but for $75 I bought a GPS that talks to me.

    Well there's both good news.....

And better news on this project...

Good news, I heard from the seller for the compass and he is willing to sell me just the compass ball instead of requiring the purchase of the whole assembly at $2 a pop instead of $17.

Better news, my teacher is willing to purchase the material (metal and cutters) under the school account and I'll be paying him for the material so that cuts down a considerable cost as well.

If anyone is interested at $50 shipped, PM me.

Got caught up in other projects in class so I'll be in there tomorrow and if everything goes as planned I'll have a demo.

Still waiting on a picture for a beer tap handle.... :D

FYI Aluminum gets SUPER hot in the summer. I had a steel shift knob in one of my cars for a while and it was unusable in the summer.

x2. I had a counterweight shift knob in my Evo and the first time I touched that thing after it had been parked in the sun, I was like the dude from Raiders of the Lost Ark when he grabbed the medallion from the fire.
