Timing? Timing chain? Valve? Bad motor?

This is exactly what mine does, 10 months after head gasket replacement.

Any mechanical guesses?

This is not my vehicle, but mine is a 2.7 3RZ

 

My old ranger had that noise. Ticking that would go up or down with the RPM. Turned out to be a valve.

 

How many miles on engine? I had a connecting rod bearing wear out on a rebuilt 22RE engine and it sounded similar. When the rod bearing wears, the piston has more room to move up and hits the valves on the up stroke. The engine lasted another 300 miles after the clacking started. Had to replace motor.

 

Kind of sounds like a connecting rod or wrist pin bearing. But sounds like it's misfiring or the timing is crap. Just my .02


You can kill spark to cylinders and see what happens. If all the sudden the noise goes away or it doesn't drop in RPMS either that cylinder isn't firing or you've found the cylinder that has the noise problem like a rod knock etc... if it's valves it shouldn't change but you should drop in RPMs.

 

Is the timing chain tensioner functional? How did the guides look?
