Just sold my 4 cylinder Tacoma 4x4 because I wanted something different. I'm choosing between a 2006 Tacoma regular cab manual that has 92k miles with a leer topper for 9000 OR a 2001 Tacoma TRD xtra cab v6 auto with 90k miles for 8700.

The 06 is the original owner. Has the leer shell and was just service (front rear diff and tranny/transfer case). He seems like he has taken pretty good care of the truck.

The 01 is a TRD that has been in a one moderate and one minor wreck. It also had its engine replaced under warranty around 40k miles and is on its 3rd owner according to carfax. The truck has a tonneu cover, new blizzak winter tires, bed liner. It looks like it's in ok shape but I'm a little nervous about the carfax.

Some of you may think it's a no brainer and that I should go with the 06 but I'm just not sure what I want to do. I've never really looked into a carfax report and was wondering how much I should really worry about the two wrecks since the frame was replaced.

So should I get the 06, the 01, or keep looking?

    EDIT: Decided to keep looking.

the 2nd gens have a lot of wheel bearing problems, windshield chatter, & 4x4 diff issues. Im a 1st gen guy all the way. I bought my 99' loaded 4x4 as my 3rd taco w/ 208K. As for the carfax, there are plenty of vehicles out there that have been in accidents but are not reported. You really have to get a magnet & stick it to every panel on the vehicle(truck in your case).
Also, the 3.4L motor is bulletproof & it'll be less on ins & cheaper for parts/mods

I voted 06. Though I do love first gens, the wrecks would turn me off for that truck. Plus the 06 has a manual trans and I personally prefer a manual

I voted "Keep looking". I'm biased because I don't like regular cabs or automatic transmissions. If it were me I'd keep looking

Well I passed on both of the trucks. If I had a choice I would like to buy a low mileage V6 5 speed TRD but I'm not having any luck. I'm coming from a 4cyl xtra cab but my main reason for selling the truck was to take the money and buy something cheaper. I found another 02 xtra cab 4cyl with 106k miles for $8400 that looks very clean as well as an 01 double cab trd with 119k miles for $9000. Decisions Decisions...

I'd say the 01 because Reg cabs are useless, but those wrecks turn me off. There are better first gens to be had!

    Need suggestions
I made a very similar choice two weeks ago an 01 TRD 4x4 with 100k or 05 RC 4x4 with 85. I got the regular cab because automatic transmission are for pussies imo

That's the whole reason I made the thread, not really sure what I want. When it comes down to actually making the purchase I will buy what I want. Just looking for a little insight on the few out there that have owned multiple different Tacoma's.

If I have a choice It will be a 5 speed for sure. Love being able to control my gears.

I would take everything on a TRD including the automatic over a standard issue RC 4x4 manual anyday.
