I'm getting a new muffler and exit pipe this weekend and was just wondering what you guys think looks the best. I had to cut the stock pipe off because it was hitting my leaf springs after I installed lift shackles. I have a 98 prerunner V6. And should I make the pipe coming out of the muffler any bigger?

Nah, 2.5 is a good size for Tacomas.

Dump after axle. Trust me. I have a Magnaflow 18 inch and that's just about as quiet as you get with after markets and it would drive me INSANE if I had dumped it before the axle.

I used to not hear it at highway speed, but since I got new tires, it's all I hear.

For the first week it's super kick ass hearing your exhaust all the time, but it grows old.

I have mine after the axle and turned out to the side. Some people point it down the distribute the noise more evenly, but it's pretty even when it comes out the side.

    Dump after axle.

That's probably what I'll do then. Did notice any reduction in power since you took off the rest of the pipe, losing back pressure? I've always heard people say the Tacoma engines love back pressure

I have the same amount of pipe running now as I did then.

No loss of power that I've noticed.

Don't go any larger then 2.5''. You loose low end torque if you do.

Yes Tacomas like their back preassure. You shouldn't open up the exhaust too much otherwise the low end takes a dive.

I have stock pipe to a 14'' Maganaflow with 2.5'' out to a 3'' tip and it'll stall sometimes coming off high revs or just the start up. Not a huge deal but thats from opening up the exhaust. I didn't notice a big difference in low end lost but gained a bit up top so it was fine.

    here is my trucks routing.

Very stealthy. Quieter in the cab all around(had it dumped for a while) but louder out side the cab. Great tone and sound.

    tail pipe over the axle

changed muh junk back in '04...
I use a FM40, first did a turn down off the back of the 40...
droned badly at hwy speeds... hated that.

    next...
tail pipe was reintroduced... 2.5" OD
    Drone was dimished
lost some torque (noticeable to me)
and the exhaust gurgled more and popped occasionally
scavenging issue I figured... hated that II

Third time was the charm ! ('05)
changed out the tail pipe for the oem 2.25"
the torque that was lost was returned...
the gurgle subsided and I never hear popping noises.
turned the 40 vertical... (less to grind) ;)

2013 still finds the later ^ residing (no rust here) ;) :)

If I were gonna roll around WOT all the time...
yeah... the 2.5" might flow better

but for precision crawling... torque is king ! [IMG]
