I just bought this little 98 tacoma 4x2 with a 2.4L and automatic. it has 111k miles on it.

The problem is that it is only getting about 16.5 mpg (city driving). i would have thought it would do better.

It has been tuned up (new plugs and wires) with a fresh air filter. It runs ok for the most part. it seems like there is a little slow pulsing in the motor as it goes. hard to describe but it seems to rev and slow slightly as it's going at constant speed.

i just cleaned the throttle body today and it seems to be running a little better.

any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated.

Try disconnecting the battery and cleaning out the mass airflow sensor. I highly dought your front o2 sensor is going out. Some may say try sea foam.

SeaFoam the beast. Might need a valve adjustment that that many miles... I get about 20mpg.

    Redline Fuel cleaner wil help.
Put it ina tank that is from 1/4 to empty. then fill it with Chevron 89.

Also do the battery disconnect thing.
Also get the Computer scanned for stored codes.

Add 5 to 10 PSI of air in the tires to make sure they are good.
If the ride is to harsh then lower back to the dorr sticker.

The truck has factory size tires right?

The only time I go bad milage like that was when I was pullinga trailor and fully loaded to almost Max compaticy and driving up a 50 mile hill...
