truck wont start

i have a 2003 tacoma prerunner. went outside to start my truck wouldnt start, did not click or anything i jumped it and it started let it idle for a while shut it off tried to start it again. same thing no sound, nothing. checked battery with volt meter it is normal. jumpd it again checked battery again while running voltage was up to arounf 14.7. alternator had magnetic force while spinning. let it idle for a while again shut it off. same thing no start, no noise nothing. help me

i jumped it and disconnected the battery still ran so looks ike u guys are right battery is done. its only a year and a half old. good thing it has a 2 year warranty.

took the battery to autozone it tested fine. said its probably my starter.

ok so i tooky my starter to autozone and they tested it there and it passed 3 times. a washer was out of place which kept the solenoid from going completeley back in but he put it back in place and it passed the test 3 times.

so i went home put the starter back in and hoped for a miricle. hooked the battery up and nothing. didnt start. no click nothing. i figured i would pull the battery out of my suburban and try that one so i took out the tacomas battery and hooked up the suburban battery with jumper cables (suburban battery was on the side of the truck on a stand) i cranked it and the truck started. so it was looking like the battery. i did it about 3 times and it started 3 times. i figured autozone didnt test my battery right. so i hooked up the original battery again and it would click once, then u would turn the key againa nd nothing would happen at all no lights on dash nothing. so i hooked up the suburban battery again and it did the same thing clicked once, then nothing no lights nothing.

im stumped i put the battery back in the suburban and it started it up immediately. someone please chime in and let me know what they think. so basically im bck where i first started. please help

Next guess would be a bad fuse. Or bad ground. Have you checked all the fuses?

Never disconnect a battery while the engine is running. That's a no no for your alternator.

Alright so did they load test your battery? What is the voltage when you try to crank it over? Check to make sure that you don't have a massive voltage drop between battery and cables. So check voltage drop at terminals/posts.

im not sure if they load tested my battery he just told me its at 89 percent so it should start ur truck. truck still starts when i jump it. i jumped it this morning and noticed that the dash lights were kind of flickering as the truck was running. does that mean anything.

X2 on this. NEVER run an engine with the battery disconnected. The battery is what stabilizes and allows the alternator's internal voltage regulator to adjust itself. No battery and the regulator could potentially overshoot, going up to as high as 20+ volts, and frying electronic components.



As for the OP. Your description is leading me to believe you are having trouble with one or both of the battery terminals. When you connect the jumper cables to the battery, you clamp them to the outside of the terminals which allow the voltage to pass directly into the cable. When starting it from the battery, the voltage has to go from the post to the INSIDE of the terminal, then into the cable. Look for corrosion, loose terminals, or something of the like. I would be willing to bet if you replaced both of the terminals, it would start. Perhaps you have pictures of what it looks like under the hood?

That's a good observation. I never thought of it like that. The terminals on the battery look fine and not loose or anything. I'm at work right now so I cannot take pictures right now. I will later tho. Also does the interior ligts flickering ( more like going dim then bright again) mean much. Thanks for your response.

The flickering also supports a poor connection failure at the battery terminal.

NEVER disconnect a batter while running. If you don't know something as simple as that you should no be working on your truck. You will end up damaging more components.

From everything you said it sounds like the battery or the connections are a the issue.

Check to see what voltage at starter when in crank position when not starting ,might have a voltage drop issue ie excessive resistance somewhere
