Do you have to drop the front diff if you do a 3"? I really don't want to have to do all of that. I was looking into the 2.5" bilstein 5100 kit with a 2" AAL in the rear plus pro comp 7089 with 285/75/16 duratracs. I hope I won't have any issues with that setup but was thinking about doing the 3"

Am I the only one that realized he has a second gen?

    Wrong section.

Rubs the frame at full lock.

I noticed that as well, however, he said he ordered the 881 which are 1st gen specific so I'm assuming he has a first gen along with a 2nd gen:confused:

Then again you know what they say about assuming.

Guess I had better update my vehicle info. It is a first gen. I had a second but chose to downgrade and get rid of a vehicle payment. No regrets so far. I did love the second gen but the first gens are solid trucks as well. Thank you guys for all the help. I still change my mind every couple of hours. I am just going to have to pull the trigger and live with the decision I make.

I am in the same boat as you but I know from experience with other vehicles that if you really want the 285/75/16 just do it because it's going to actually make you happy. I'm just trying to figure out what I have to do to keep it from rubbing driving in the pavement.

i so indecisive. Now I am considering 255/85/16 or 285/75/16. Decided to go big but the tall skinnies would be great in the mountains.

295's is what you want... [IMG]

btw... 255's are right about 33" (mounted on truck)
(^ W 7.5" wheel width. ( 8" width wheel could make that slightly shorter)
the RT03's are slightly taller, 'bout 33.25" (mounted on truck, 8"W wheel)

Makes 285's and 255's look less burly :p

The Hankook RT03 295's only come in a "D" load...
but the sidewall's are easily as thick in construction
as the 285 "E" load tires.
These suckers would be heavy if they came in an "E" load
^ might as well do 35's if it's gonna be heavy

    * Previously I rolled KMII 285/75/16 "E"

thanks for the visual, that helps out. Damn the more I research the more confused I get. What is the best offset and backspace to clear a 285/75/16?

    4.0" - 3.75"
3.75" would've been a better choice for me...
(^ now that I know more, have 295's)
    4" BS'ing is a good call for 285/75/16's ;)

    * be sure the wheel's center chunk clears the brake caliper
test fit the wheels before installing tires.
That way they could be returned/exchanged unused.

There is a list of wheels that fit properly in the FAQ

    I roll PC 8069-6883... 16 X 8, -11 mm off set, 4" BS
and this wheel/off set allows for the tundra brake upgrade.
^ Originally designed to spec for Wheeler's Off Road, by procomp,
but Wheeler's no longer sells them.

^ these wheels are thicker at the hub center...
and so would require longer hub studs or at the very least.
ET, 60* taper, conical lug nuts (ET = extended thread)

Steelie wheels such as sold by Wheeler's off road...
have a much thinner material at the wheel's center chunk...
so the the factory studs should be long enough.

Sold here or even direct I believe.
    4Wheelparts

bought mine from these guys... cheaper deal then current tho'
(was personally/hand delivered by Discount Tire)

very helpful. Thank you. I thought that was the backspacing that I was looking for, but then I read a post today talking about too little backspacing will cause rubbing as well. My head was spinning. I was really leaning towards the ATX Artillery, however those are 16x9 with 4.5 backspacing and -12 offset.

If that was supposed to be a link it didn't work for me. What is the minimum offset whelks have to be on the 1st gens to clear the caliper? I was looking at pro comp 7089 with 4.5" bs and 0 offset. I plan on running 285/75/16

Link works here and on muh laptop...
must be something blocking on your end.

Muh 8069-6883's have -11 mm off set...
    they are also 4.0" BS'd

off set does not always assure a proper hub fit.
As it also depends on the coning (form) of the wheels center chunk.
Some wheel designs might still not clear even with an acceptable off set.

4.50" is the factory BS'ing... * 265/75/16 max tire size

    You'll need 4.0" - 3.75" of BS'ing to fit a 285 (11.50" width)

TTORA has a list in the FAQ's that show what wheels fit, and don't.
    Maybe something here... never looked.

I've seen people run 285/76/16 with 4.5 back spacing...I just want to make sure that my wheels that I am going to order are going to fit.

correction stock trd alloy wheels are not 4.5" BS they are like 5.75" or something like that.

you can run a 285/75/16 on a wheel with 4.5" BS many guys have this or 4"

Icon MT suspension, Pelfreybuilt front bumper, Relentless skids, Avid sliders, Avid custom rack. Pelfreybilt HC Rear bumper.
I have a 2012 Tacoma Access Cab with about 2.5" lift via ICON extended trave coilovers up front, and ICON leaf pack in back as well as their remoter resi shocks in the rear. I am running 265/75R16 Dura-trac tires and I like the look, traction is great in rocks and dirt, but I have no snow experience. I have a Pelfreybuilt front plate bumper and Warn winch, but it only settled less than an inch over stock front bumper.

    REASONS I CHOSE 265 over 285's:
    1) No rubbing and, no trimming at all.
    2) Do not need to swap ring and pinion to retain reasonable power.
    3) Lower weight (especially if you use light wheels) means better handling on the street and less loss of braking power.
    4) As the 255/85 guys love to quote, narrower tires actually have better traction in anything but beach sand, so my 265's are really a happy medium.

While the bigger tires look "bad ass" to some folks, sometimes it looks like a kids toy

I just want to make sure that a wheel with 4.5" of BS and 0mm offset will clear the caliper.

^ 4.5" maybe with a wheel hub spacer...
or be sure yer tire selection does not included side biter lugs...
'cause it's gonna rub good on both sides the frame at full steering lock.
It's also likely to be real close to or even rub the UCA if aired down some.

    tho' it could be done...
IMO... 4.5" BS isn't a good call for 285's installed on 1st gen junk.
