265 vs. 285

I am really torn on what tire size I want to go with right now. I just ordered my full OME kit w/881's. I had initially planned on running 265 duratracs. I am a bit concerned that there will be too much wheel well showing. I love the look of the 285's. I do a fair amount of off roading and some in deep snow. That is why I am deciding against the 255/85/16. I have the ATX Artillery wheels on order. They have an offset of -12. How much trimming would be neccessary to fit the 285's with this setup. I know there are a lot of threads relating to these two tire sizes, but a lot of them are geared at 2nd gens. Thanks!

I know nothing of the OME set-up you refer but, go with the 285-75's.
The look you are after with filling up the wheel well will be achieved and a bit more ground clearance.

I am running the stock 16 hole spare wheels, 16x7's and 285-75-16 General Grabbers AT2's.
I did have slight rubbing at full lock on the frame, rear of the wheel on both sides.
I installed 1/2" spacers and longer studs on both sides, no rubbing turning or @ full stuff.
My Icons are set @ 2 1/4" of lift.

265's


I have 285's now with 881's and the 10mm spacer. Wheels are 4.5" of BS. The "look" of the truck with 265's always bothered me, could never really put my finger on what bothered me. I will say that 285's look awesome and I wish I would have stepped it up a long time ago.

There are some downsides. The brakes seem a little mushy now, not horrible, but definitely noticeable. The truck is a little slower (I have stock gears), but I don't drive my truck like a sports car either.

I didn't cut or trim anything to fit the tires and I don't rub, however, I have not taken the truck off-road since getting tires a few weeks ago. I am 100% sure it will rub if fully flexed, but I understood this before stepping up to 33's and I will make the necessary changes before doing any serious trails.

285's on honda passport wheels, no spacers, no lift I just trimmed the pinch weld and little of the black plastic on bottom of bumper no more rubbing unless fully stuffed.

Not sure who you are referring to...both my photos are labeled with the tire size.

On my post the top picture (black wheels) is w/ 285's, the lower picture (silver wheels) is with 265's.

If I were to have a use for chains, I don't think they would clear.

You mentioned you do a lot of driving off road and in snow. You would be better off with 255/85R16. I switched my winter tire size from 265 to 245 and the traction was much better. If you're thinking about going with wider tires for flotation than you'll need to go much, much wider than 285. You're braking, acceleration, and mileage will also take a bigger hit with 285s. Some things to consider.

I am getting 20 mpg with 285's but, I did re-gear to 5.29's as I have an auto trans.

What were your MPGs before you went with 285s? You also have a pre-runner so that helps. How's your snow traction?

No change in mpg from 4.88's w/ 265-75-16's to the current 5.29's & 285's. I must add that I have a modified TB by LC Engineering which definitely helps.
Not much snow in San Diego, so I cannot comment.

This thread is one I referred to when thinking about lifts. Not exactly what you're after but it may help with some visuals on wheel well gap.

I want to keep my 31s and get a 2-2.25" lift (OME 881s and Dakar leafs) but am afraid of having too much gap in the wheel well.

On top of these pics I did see a 1st gen on the trail that had the same lift as I was thinking and running the stock 265/75? r16 tires. Looked really good IMO
