As the title says, can I use the axle shafts from my 8.4 in a TRD 8" axle?

I need a confirmed "yes I have done this and it swaps fine" or a "no i tried and it failed" type of answer haha.

I swapped my axle shafts from my 8.4" axle to my 8" e-locker axle. They are the same length and use the same splines.

Well...thats good to hear. should make for and easy swap if everything from the third out is the same or at least compatible.

do you have any pics or a write up or anything about your swap? Im in the process of piling parts together to see if this is gonna be a reality.

I think the page you're linking to is for axle shafts for older 8" axles. The 8" axle that came with the e-locker has the same axle shafts as the 8.4" axle.

uuhhhh what model? It's a tacoma...honestly dont remember if its a 01-04 or older. I dont have it yet, hopefully ill get it tomorrow and take the third out and check for damage. The axle housing is bent, so I want to make sure the third is not damaged before I buy it.

My e-locker axle housing came out of a '98 tacoma. My e-locker third came from a '04 tacoma. My axle shafts came out of my factory 8.4" axle that was in my '03 tacoma. It all went together perfectly :)

    Don't forget about ABS.
Every E-locker I have seen has provisions for ABS, even when the truck does not have it.
ABS shafts have a longer machined area for the bearing, 2 retainers and reluctor ring where the non ABS shafts have just a bearing and 1 retainer
An E-locker rear will need ABS shafts.

As long as both trucks don't have abs it could work i know the abs shafts have a slightly different taper and different spine count (i am pretty sure on this but you'll need to double check)

Yes, sort of, it works as long as they are both ABS shafts.
Marlin once made an adapter that would press into an ABS tube to allow the use of a non ABS shaft. The adapter just effectively reduced the size of the ABS tube and had a bore that would accept the non ABS seal in the non ABS location.

So if Truck has abs and i don't have abs I still can't use my axle shafts? Fack. And there is no way around that ?

Anyone have a pic of the differnece between the 2?

    Here ya go.

TRD E-lockers use the ABS shafts, a non ABS shaft will not work in an E-locker. I don't know how to say it any simpler.

The ABS provision on the TRD can be spotted from the outside. On the topside of the ABS rear, right next to the backing plate there will be a bulge where the ABS sensor would go. Usually this spot is machined flat, drilled for the sensor and capped with a plastic plug secured by 1 bolt. In rare cases it is just the rough steel and not machined/drilled.

So am I able to put a non abs seal in an abs housing and run the non abs axle? I dont see why not.

No, go back and read post #16. Now look at your 2nd pic. It is hard to see but where the ABS seal sits, the bore of the tube necks down. That 1.5" or so of empty tube outboard of the seal has a diameter significantly greater than the O.D. of the seal.

The O.D. of both seals is exactly the same and frankly, IIRC, they are the same seal. If not, they are real close.
The adapter Marlin made was essentially a "reducing bushing" that pressed into the over sized ABS tube, reducing it to the appropriate diameter to accept the seal and locate it out at the end of the tube like your pic #1

I don't think Marlin stocks this adapter or how much he gets for it but I am sure he would whip out a pair if that is the way you want to go. Give him a call.
