New engine or rebuild?

I have a '96 Tacoma that overheated and hasn't started since. When I took it to a mechanic, he said that gas isn't getting to the engine and suggested installing a new engine which would cost a little over $3000. What do you think about this price and would it be more cost-effective to rebuild the engine? My friend said he would help me with the rebuild if I chose to go down that route.

your "mechanic" said that you need a new engine because gas isnt getting to the engine? if u need a new engine due to the fact it overheated real bad, i might believe that. his story isnt added up to me...

2jz swap haha thats what im doing when my motor goes, you can pick up the motor, the turbos and ecu etc together for like 1800 and with th 5 speed tranny it will work with some sort of adapter i believe but the tranny would need to be rebuilt to handle that as well as new clutch depending if its auto or standard

Do not do 2jz swap waste of time and money especially if you have a 4.0 I've done it I dot over 11000$ in mine and I should've done turboed lsx

A good gte is going to cost close to 3500 $ you should still tear it down replace gaskets put arp head studs you can build 700hp of of a stock gte you just have to change turbo, header, exaught , fuel injectors, computer, clutch, cams pretty much everything and that far into it go ahead and build bottom end

Ps boosted cars are faster if auto because it doesn't blow off in between shifts

true but used without a rebuild you can find them decently cheap, and i just love the sound of the 2jz. ahh i need a supra

If you want a 2jz and have it cheep and decently quick get a ge vvti engine from junk yard throw it in turbo it with a single turbo the manifold is less than 200 $ you'll probably be fine with reliability under 500hp but torque would be a lot better due to higher compression and vvti

Have you heard of a diverter valve? AKA blow off valve if it's vent to atmosphere? It allows the turbo to spin with less restriction for the short period of time during a shift. Works great on my turbo Miata.

Na I don't worry about it. I let off the trans brake and bump the shifter twice and maintain over 30psi through prettt much the whole pass. Plus manual cars have the risk of missing a gear

Would be an impressive engine in a Tacoma. Just an expensive swap. Would need a custom programming I would think for the ECU for the VVTi to work. I would like to see it tho!
