rear diff leak??

So my pumpkin housing is leaking trans fluid. Mechanic can't find rebuilt/used so buying a new housing. Leaving in 2 weeks on trip hauling 2 ATVs about 500 miles. Dumb ? If my rear trans acts up or burns up, can I just disconnect the rear axel and drive in 4wd for temporary fix if stranded

If yer going on a 500 mile trip with a leaky axle housing...
be sure to check it and keep that topped off.
Only you know how rapid that leak is.
You should make it, if it's not leaking too fast.

If your "DIFF" is leaking then follow ^^^^^ advice... would not suggest the 4wd to get home if rear grenades. but do what you gotta do. And if your mechanic cant find reseal kit go to a new mechanic you can buy em from ECGS....

Obviously I am no mechanic but where the rear Axel meets the drive shaft, that big metal housing rusted out and is leaking. Sorry not a gear head so if using wrong terms don't get ....

 

so yer now referring to the the third member ?

leaking from the pinion bearing or seal of the 3rd to the axle housing ?
the 3rd member housing is purdy stout... can't see that leaking of itself.

and yer mechanic says you need a new axle housing ?

something isn't right here...

so you don't get shafted by others.

start by reading thru your model year's factory service manual

 

answer is YES, if you have a 4x4 and the rear end goes dog shit,
you can drop driveshaft and drive in 2wd front drive, as an emergency
measure. it is not ideal to do so, but hell, drive 350 miles or 1000 nothing
should break*

*as long as the rear wheels rotating do not further
destroy or chew up the rear diff and actually cause it to break open
or destroy a rear axle or the housing

 

^ sometimes ya get lucky... sometimes not

if the differential grenades...
little chunks of gear teeth and other metal fragments
could effectively lock/seize the differential to the carrier.
^ this could effectively lock the axles up.

low or zero oil level... could cause metal weld
but that would be better then fragmentation.

 

post pictures of said leak. so we can help you make the riht choice.

Personnaly, I would just make sure that the diff is full of oil before your trip. Use something thick like 90-130 gear oil. That is unless oils is just pooring out of your diff but I doubt that.
