01 Tacoma Shifter Shake

Hey guys so here is a video of the shaking my shifter does. Sorry about the bad angle. The video is in fifth gear and I think somewhere around 60-70 mph. The rattling isn't the shifter its some stuff in my cup holder. Do you guys think this is normal? I was kinda thinking U-joints or maybe the transmission mount could be contributing. My shifters shake a little, but only when going over rough roads. On a smooth highway they don't shake at all. You didn't write how many miles your ride has...

1998, 69000 miles

 

Watching the video on that I don't think that's the problem because my shifter really doesn't have that much play at all.

 

120,000 Miles. I was the highway when i video'd this the road is pretty smooth but not perfect.

 

Hows the rest of the truck in terms of shaking? I had the same problem, thought it was the shifter seats which I heard is common. Turned out to be tire balance.

 

I think the tires actually do need rebalanced. I have felt the wheel shake like the tires are out of balance but it wasn't really doing it while I took the video, I suppose it still could be it though.

 

Seems excessive for a smooth road. My 2nd gen doesn't move much at all. My 86 4x4 I don't believe moved that much either.

 

Mine probably shook about like that when I had my old tires. Hell my 4wd shifter shook itself right out of existence! (JK I never had a 4x4 shifter )They kinda slowly got out of balance and I didn't really notice because of how gradual it happened. Got new tires last week, holy crap! This thing is like a cadillac now

 

The tranny shifter seems to be shaking more than the TC shifter. One possible culprit is the shifter nylon bushing, where it connects to the shifter forks (?). Is the shifting a bit sloppy?

On older pickups, this is replaceable. Marlin sells the bushings as well as the dealer. I replaced mine on my '84 4Runner. Access to the bushing is thru the top of the tranny. Fairly easy job with normal hand tools. Tacoma trannies may be the same.

 

Ive got 170000 on mine.... Doesnt shake like that at all.

 

I have the shifter wiggle when in 5th gear and on the throttle but nothing like that. That seems to be pretty wild.

 

So yesterday I went and checked out the transmission mount. The rubber itself really doesn't look that bad. There are some hairline cracks in it towards the bottom though. Also I noticed that just pushing on the transmission by hand the mount rubber on the mount will move very slightly. Does it sound like the mount is bad? Another thing that makes me think mounts is that on a 2-3 shift I you don't balance the pedals just right there is a clunk sound when you let the clutch out and you can feel it in the shifter. Thanks again.

 

Mine looks similar to yours actually and I just posted a thread last week about it. Mine only happens in 5th, but is much more consistent, while it only completely stops shaking in 5th while decelerating. As soon as the gas is pressed it gets right back to "normal". I'm leaning towards the bushing...just because it's the cheapest.

Anybody know about that clunk on the 2-3 shift I was talking about?

 

My guess would be that the driveshaft slip joint needs to be greased. My 86 used to do that, the 2006 hasn't done it yet, but it doesn't have a lot of miles on it either.

 

Mine does this, but I have a HD Transfercase mount.

 

Well I went out to try and grease the slip joint an discovered something. As I was putting grease in I saw it was just coming out on the other side of the grease zerk. Comparing it to my dads 05 tundra it looks like I'm missing the "cap" on the slip joint that faces the u joint. So the slip joint isn't sealed up at all. Anybody know where I could get this cap?

 

So It looks like its called a freeze plug. Does anybody know what size?

 

If you fill up the zerk it'll overflow whenever it is full...If I'm portraying this right....got a pic?

Does this happen on in certain gears?
