I bought a 04' tacoma v6 automatic 4x4 a few months ago, truck has 92,000 on it and is super clean. My question is when the truck is cold it will hold 2nd or 3rd gear (not sure which but it's the same one everytime.) till the motor reaches 2500 rpms. After it does it one time it shifts normally afterwards. Is this normal? Also having occasional problems starting. Mostly after the truck has sat a few hours. Take 7to 10 seconds to start or starts then dies, but will crank normal after it dies. Any suggestions.

I know during the really cold winter months, my auto shifts very slowly for the first 5 minutes or so, especially into OD...

When the weather warms though, not a problem, so I don't worry...you might benefit greatly from a tranny fluid flush...

The start problems, are you kicking any check engine light blinkies or full on???

If so, just about any chain type autoparts store (autozone, advance, O'reilly's) will read it for free....

The dying after start would bug me too....

I have the same truck but an 03. Also have the same issues. I'm taking it next week for a 135,000 mile check up. I'm going to ask them about it while I'm there.

No light are on. The truck wont fully start just hit a few times real rough and then cut off. After that starts right up.

My 01 auto holds the gears longer as well and does not go in to overdrive when it's cold. According to my owners man. It's supposed to do so to help it warm up to operating temps faster.

As to the hard starting mine can be slow to start sometimes aswell, so not to sure about that.

My 04 v6 dc 4x4 trans acts similar when cold, holds second gear a little long one time. I had a Toyota tech tell me its normal and wont affect anything. Flush wouldn't be a bad idea though, if you don't go to dealer make sure they use correct fluid for Toyotas. Using wrong trans fluid in these will damage the trans.
