I was in the reverse situation just a few months ago. In Feb '12 the wife and I bought a '12 Tacoma DCLB TRD Sport and I loved every second of driving it. The blessing of our first son came 9 months later. (Celebrated the new truck too hard I guess?). So, paying the truck payments, insurance and extra gas and having a new little one was too much. So, last month I sold the '12 and bought a '01 DC TRD. I love this truck as much as the '12. A touch smaller both inside and engine wise, but I have no regrets. I am almost done paying for it (hopefully be the end of summer), I pay way less in insurance and am averaging 2-3 mpgs better in town with the 3.4. I don't think you can go wrong with either truck, but if family is what is causing the truck change, I say avoid the higher cost of a new(er) truck and see if you can get a double cab first gen. My baby seat just fits in the center of the back row. Have fun! Looking at new trucks is a blast, and if you can wait, get top dollar for yours. Good luck!

Revisited the dealer today and brought my 99 in for a trade appraisal. Was offered 9700 in trade, which is equivalent to 10500 (private party) due to the sales tax deduction we get in WA. Seriously considering this deal...I have a an offer for a '14 dbl cab (msrp of 33175) for 30205+ttl.

Don't know why I have such an issue with selling my truck...

Get some Wet Okoles if seat comfort is what you're after, and then a quality suspension set up for a smoother ride

Thought about that as well. Went as far as almost ordering all new springs, leaf packs and shocks...But the real issue is space, 5 hour road trips are rough with anyone sitting behind the front seats. I clean 1st gen dbl cab would be the fix, unfortunately 5 months of watching craiglist and auto trader haven't yielded anything reasonable yet....

Mmm yeah that's what I fear about having my extended cab. I'm ALWAYS hearing of guys needing bigger rides, due to family. They'll be getting harder and harder to find, but for now I'm fine with my ride now, no kiddos for A LOOOOONG TIME *knock on wood*

$9500 is a pretty fair trade in for that truck, if you ask me. I mean, it is 15 years old. I'd say if you're dead set on a new one, that's a pretty fair deal.

I wouldn't even be considering a new truck if this fit the family. Double cab 1st gen would be awesome.

So the dealer really wants this truck I suppose. It's completely stock which helps with selling, carfax is good as well.

I think generally the biggest bitch that people have from the first gen to the second is that it's bigger isn't it ? I mean...taking a look at the truck he has it hasn't seen alot of hard trail use...or he's on some pretty open trails with no branches hanging over. Other than that, what are your major concerns about the new truck ? And just as an aside...if I slide the front seat all the way back,I'm stretching to press the clutch in all the way ( I'm 6'1" )so I've got it a but closer,so there's plenty of room back there for adults..much less kiddos.

Exterior is bigger, interior feels a little smaller.
I'm comfortable in my 1st gen DC, in my sis's DC i feel a little cramped.
Also, the steering wheel is really low in the 2nd gens, even on the highest setting it rubs my knees.

Hey OP, have you since made any sort of decisions, or you still 50/50 on the whole thing? Honestly, you really can't go wrong either way, whether you get a 1st or 2nd gen. Besides the obvious things that were already stated (higher payments, higher insurance, mpg, etc.), the main difference is space/size, at least for the reasons you're looking.

I've worked for Toyota for quite a few years so I've had the opportunity to drive many different 1st and 2nd gens, and I enjoy them both. I ended up going with a 1st gen double cab, and for quite a few reasons:
-Space (for future kids, family, etc.)
-Proven reliability (1st gens been around 9 yrs)
-Lower cost overall (payments, ins, gas)
-Ease of maintenance/ repairs (strictly my opinion, but I prefer to work on the 3.4 vs. 4.0)

I do agree with what many of the others say about getting a 1st gen double cab, but one thing you need to consider is how long you're willing to wait. I actively looked for roughly 1 year before finding mine, but I'm happy I did. I got my '04 TRD DC 4x4 w/48k on it for $15k in 2010. While looking, I found many other double cabs with much higher miles and a higher price tag. It comes down to being flexible with mileage and time spent looking.

As for the 2nd gens, I love them too! I've even considered trading mine in once or twice, but then realized that I have a decent truck and no car payments, which is very nice. In my opinion though, if you do settle on a 2nd gen, I'd go with an '09 or higher. Reason being, the earlier year second gens had a few more issues than the later years (leaking timing cover, u-joints, 6 speed trans issues, etc.), given it was the new generation and took time to weed out the issues. Also, given those earlier years will most likely have higher miles, most of them will already be out of warranty or wont have the option of extended warranty (which is a good piece of mind). But then again, get a 1st gen and definitely have no option for warranty, unless you purchase an aftermarket one.

Again, much to think about, but hopefully some of my rambling helped. Oh, and if you do go with a brand spankin new 2nd gen, shop around the different dealers and see what kinds of incentives they offer. One of the Toyota dealers in my area offers a lifetime powertrain warranty with brand new purchase. Good luck!

Those are all great points. I too spent a long time searching for the truck I have now. I've got a great trade offer and almost 10% MSRP on a '14 double cab TRD O/R manual. I really like the first gen double cab, but also really want a manual transmission. I still haven't pulled the trigger, but am seriously leaning towards the new truck. I was offered 9700 in trade for my '99, which brings the new truck down to a little over 21k after ttl.

I had a 06 Tacoma before my 01. BOTH are really great trucks. You would not be unhappy with a 2nd gen! Little more room, more towing, more power. I had 6 speed manual. I put close to 110k on it before selling (financial reasons). Never a single issue with it.

Oil changes on it were a breeze. Filter sits right on top of the motor pretty much.

That is a heck of a trade in offer and final price for the new Taco! I'd be VERY hard pressed not to go for it! I say go for it!

Yeah, the offer took some work as did the truck sell price. I have it in writing sitting on the fridge, just haven't made it back to the dealer. Cold feet when I think about giving up the '99.
