In the shop...!!

Just dropped the truck off for a new timing belt, water pump, t-stat, and spark plugs. Happy it's finally getting done. Just wont be crazy about the bill tho.

Yeah parts included. It wasn't too bad I suppose just would have rather put that cash into a suspension or something.

Holy hell! That's why the only "shop" mine goes to is the driveway for the most part. Don't know about the timing belt and water pump cost (that was probably most of it actually) But plugs and new accessory belts/idlers and a coolant flush cost me about $80 in parts.

Instead of taking it in. Buy a decent OBDII scanner (<$100) and find what the code is.

Dollars to dobnuts its a misfire (P0300) or an 02 sensor or Cat. Converter issue. The money you spend paying someone to do the work can be better spent on buying tools that you can keep and do the work yourself.

If you end up needing plugs, 02 sensors, or Cats, go OEM if you can afford it. Although OEM cats are super expensive.

That is not an unexpected price at all for a timing belt/water pump job. Some of the little things people don't think about that go into a PROPER job like this are:
Belt
Pulley
Tensioner
Water pump
Thermostat
Coolant
Engine drive belts
and in this case, Spark plugs as well.
Labor (hey, us techs don't work for free!)

Sounds like you got a fair deal there.

X2. A lot of the cost is labor now, as you cannot easily replace one component without removing 4 or 5 others to get to it.

I can't do any of that type of work by myself, nor do I know how to do a lot of mechanical work with my truck. No tools, no space, etc. I'll pay to have a professional take a look and get it done right the first time. Luckily we have a good local dealership.
