*Just a little tip when removing oil filter*
I've heard that some people use a plastic bag around the filter to catch the oil that leaks out while your removing it. I have never done this, but i've read that it works pretty well.

He was a dumbass. Probably still is. If he's even still alive. I could tell stories of the crap he pulled but don't wanna 'jack this thread.

On topic though...I make a mess every time I change the oil. I take a rag and wipe the spillage all over under the truck. Free oil coating rust prevention.

So I'm going to be changing my oil for the first time tomorrow, let me make sure I got the steps right.

    Take off old filter
    put new filter on
    drain old oil
    put plug back in
    pour new oil in

am i right, or do you drain oil first then switch out the filter? or does it really matter?

i drained the oil then replaced the oil filter (don't forget to oil the gasket) since the filter will have some old oil in it then put the new oil in

when you drain the oil first there isn't as much oil in the filter when you take it off so it doesn't make a huge mess

i ended up putting another half qt in and it brought it up to the tright level... so it was 5.5 qts oil and the oil treatment bottle total

whats this oil treatment stuff? I just planned on putting 5.5 qts of synthetic in...

and what about the oil plug washer? Do I need to get a new one? Toyota parts is closed tomorrow...so would a place like pep boys or auto zone sell one? or should I wait until monday to do it so I can get a washer?

and what about tightness of the drain plug? hand tight and full turn or what? I don't own a torque wrench..

If you are using regular STP with the ZDDP anti-wear additive, it is bad for the catalytic converter in your truck. It has been removed from conventional oils for that very reason. Read the small print on the label to confirm.

Here is a link about it. Us in the muscle car hobby (I have a 69 Firebird with a flat tappet camshaft) have been dealing with this issue for some time. Engines with rller cams don't need zddp so new cars can do without.

I was doing an oil change on a Cat 426 Back Hoe, and I was talking with my Dad aasking him how much oil it took. He didnt know....Well, I was filling it up with some bulk oil useing an pnumatic oil pump, and chatting with him, when the oil started comming out of the top of the oil fill hole. On the top of the valve cover! It was a little much.

I wouldn't worry about it on a single oil change, but know that prolonged use may cause damage.

Why would add that crap to your engine...all your doing is add a thickener to the existing oil.

Changing the oil on 2nd gen trucks is the easiest oil change, the location of the oil filter is perfect. Pull the plug first, let it drain fully if you want and replace the plug, or while its draining pull off the filter, I use a spray can cap to catch the oil that leaks from the little nipple on the bottom of the oil cooler catch thingy. Replace drain plug, with new seal if you want, I do it maybe every 2nd or 3rd change, hand tight with a 3/8" drive ratchet will be plenty, no need to reef on it, fill the filter as much as you can (you gotta tip it a bit to get it in there so don't fill it right up) and lube the o-ring with CLEAN oil, tighten the filter hand tight, 1/2 turn past when the rubber touches, no need to crank on it either. Fill with your favorite oil, start truck, let run for 5 mins, check for leaks. Shut truck off check oil, top up if needed! It sounds like a lot, but it should only take 10-20 minutes. I forgot to mention make sure you truck is up to full temp before you drop the oil. Remember to dispose of used oil properly, most auto shops will take it for free!

Edit, you can't fill the filter on these trucks as they go on upside down!
