    I've come from a long line of Toyotas....have owned 2 Tacomas, '99 and '11 both V6's, now have a V8 4Runner, etc....amongs other Yotas....

    Looking for a beater type truck....good deal on a Tacoma locally, but it's a 2.7 4 cylinder.

How do these engines hold up? Will it pull a 5X10 trailer with ease?

Some bilsteins, OME 885's, and an AAL.
I've pulled a 5x10 with 2 scoops of mulch on it and IMO the truck did fine with with it. I also pulled one of the bigger uhaul enclosed trailers which I believe are in that same size vicinity full of all my stuff from Florida to South Carolina. And I'm assuming its a 6lug 2.7?

Properly maintained you can get several hundred thousand miles off a 2.7 engine. They are not exactly super-power engines, but can handle some reasonably light hauling. The biggest issue I have seen with these engines is on a hill they do tend to need to be downshifted more than I would PERSONALLY like, but they still hold up well.

I have the 2.7. It is a stout motor, no doubt. If price wasn't an issue I would have purchased a V6, but the truck turned out to be a great buy, and the best vehicle I've owned. If you are planning to buy a 2.7, inspect the valve clearance before pulling the trigger. Its common to burn an exhaust valve if the valve adjustment is neglected. It all comes down to how well it was cared for. They can haul a respectable load for a 4 cylinder but they will require a bit more legwork on the hills.

I have an 01 with the 2.7 and a 5 speed with 120K. I don't haul much but its a great engine. Never checked the valve clearance on it yet. Wonder when I should??

Ugh....still need some convincing on this. My old 99 Tacoma was the 3.4....and I think I'll be disappointed if I drop down to a 2.7. Hopefully going to drive a 2.7 TRD tomorrow.

No regrets here. Glad I went with the 5-speed though.

Not the best picture but yes, the 2.7 will tow a 5x10 trailer. With ease? Let's just say the truck will tow the load. If you plan on doing so on a constant basis, then I would say get a 6.

I've towed my 6x10 enclosed trailer with a FLHX Harley-Davidson many times. A little slow on big hills but she did fine. What you expect from a "beater" may differ from what I would. Good luck.

Almost forgot. Mine is a 2.7 with an automatic. Disable overdrive when towing.

    I didn't think they made a TRD model with a 2.7?

I went from a 3.4 4runner to the 2.7 taco. It was hard to get used to the lack of torque. But now I know the limits and how hard I need to push it to get where I want to be. Speaking on longevity, you wont have any problems there. Its a Toyota, and they made the 2-rz and 3-rz for close to 10 years. The new motor in the 2nd gens is based off of the 3rz if im not mistaken. Pull the trigger bra.

With 5" of lift and 33's..will the 2.7 turn then over OK? I'm pretty sure they will by the posts from all of you...

From the sounds of it, it sounds like my old 22RE engine. I could not kill that thing...another plus is no timing belt......

They made the TRD 2.7 it just doesn't have the rear locker. Iirc

I had my 2.7 with stock 4.10 with 33s for years. It did ok just had to down shift more on the hills and could still tow, it just won't be the fastest thing on the road. But hey it's a 4 banger.

A buddy of mine has the 2.7L 5 speed and it's a DOG! I don't know how he drives that, feels as gutless as my old 22RE was.

Although perhaps i'm just biased being that I am compairing his 2.7L to my 3.4L 5 speed Supercharged Taco and 3.4L Auto Supercharged 4Runner.

Edit: At the Toyota dealer we had a 2.7L come in all original, no rebuilds at 720,XXX miles. They can last a LONG time that's for sure!

Dude, I think you're overthinking this engine thing a little too much. Will the 2.7 pull a trailer like your 3.4 did? Obviously no, but for everyday driving I think you'll get the hang of it and have no regrets. It's not fast but it can get out of its own way. If you're looking at buying a used first gen the overall condition of the truck, especially the frame would drive my purchasing decision. The 2.7 can handle a 3500 lb trailer they say. Personally I've never hauled anything with mine but I really like the engine for its durability and low maintenance. It really likes non ethanol gas if you can find it.
