Wheel Bearing?

What kind of maintenance do i need to be doing to my wheel bearings? Any recommended interval for changing them out? Thank guys and gals

 

My truck has about 120,000 on it and i have rode trails, hauled boats, etc and a lot of highway driving. 10 years old and zero maintenance to the bearings

 

the wheel bearings are non serviceable sealed bearings. nothing you can do until they go bad, then prepare to shell out anywhere from 200-700 to get them fixed.

 

Or just the cost of the bearing and seals like those of us capable of doing such a repair ourselves.

 

Oh I'm sorry. I didn't realize the majority of us have 12 ton shop presses and air chisels in our back yard shops.

Well for those that do, parts will run you 150 minimum.

 

Didn't mean to come off as a d••k, that was the beers talking. I just meant most of us have or know someone willing to help us out with tools and labor and that helps stick it to the man at the dealer as far as price is concerned. Really your numbers were spot on, my bad.

 

Go with quality bearings like timken or such and seals so they don't go bad shortly after you replace them. I had to pay Toyota $200 fkkkkkkkkking bucks because the small shop didnt know how to press out the bearings when I brought them the knuckle

 

Timken, Koyo, and National all build good bearings for the Tacoma. I usually am able to sell entire units, ready to install, for $199 each side on the 4X4, and around $325 on the Prerunner 6 lug.

These are made with either Timken or National bearings, Dorman hub (Or Toyota factory hub on the Prerunner) and national seals. I make them preassembled, so all you have to do is unbolt the old one and bolt in the new one. Mine even come with the black o-ring on the back!

 

hmm, i thought someone said that type of pre assembled thing was for the 2nd gens? so that thing in your post just bolts in the hub? I got me bearings repressed on by a buddy at a shop for 40 bucks, so i didnt get to witness it get taken apart. Dont you still have to press off tha backing plate with the assembled unit?

 

It is for the second gen. My mistake as I thought the OP was a 2005. I think I need better reading glasses. lol.

 

oh ok haha. it is a common mistake, silly 2nd gens posting in our section. i could see how one would think it could be for a trail yacht

 

I have had a quote to replace the two bearings in the front for $300 ish (+-50)

 

Just called a dealership on mine 1000 out the door. I almost fell out of my seat. Gotta find a good mechanic in my area

 

Order all the parts yourself and have them pressed out and back in, payed 75 I think for my drivers side, took off the spindle and stopped by a shop they pressed out the old and in the new only charged me like $15

 

$300 for getting both front bearings replaced is a really good deal.

 

Smart a$$... ... I found the posting on the front page and just didn't realize it was a 1st gen posting. lol.

 

I didn't realize yours were so different than 5 lug ones... I had the hubs apart when changing spindles so I repacked my wheel bearings while I was in there. I guess that's a benefit of not having a CV axle running through it haha, no press or anything required.
