replacing the engine on a 2000 tacoma, 3.4L, would you spend the money for a re-manufactured engine that costs $2000, buts it's like getting a new engine, and has a longer warranty, or would you go with a used engine, less than 100,000 miles for $1500, a bit cheaper and less warranty?

how much is a 2000 v6 2wd pre runner trd that had 127,000 miles on it with a blown engine worth?

my husband and i just can't decide if we should spent the $2500-3500
for the engine and labor or if we should sell it as is?

we bought the car last month, paid $7800 for the truck, and the engine blew a rod, engine and block gone.

Pay the extra 500 for a rebuilt engine, and run the truck till it does.

That's what you bought it for anyways I imagine, sucks that it blew, but swap a new one in and never look back

That's terrible luck, sorry to hear it.

I too would go with the rebuilt, primarily for the warranty. Get it swapped out lickety split and you'll be back on the road.

Must not of been taken care of previously if it blew that soon. If you could possibly find a used one that you knew where it was coming from I wouldn't be scared to go that route but getting a used one you know nothing about would be about like the situation your already in. Maybe it runs forever or maybe it doesn't.

I'd love to see something that backs up that claim...

I'd go with the new, rebuild with the better warranty. With a used engine, you don't know if you're getting grandpa's daily driver or a farmer's beater truck.

I can tell you I was going through a rough spot and for a couple years all I did for my truck was change the oil. The suspension was the original with 275k mile on it. I recently got a job and could afford a new truck and thought about it for a while. But then I realized why do I want to be stuck with the 400+ monthly payment for a new truck when I could just drop a couple grand in my current truck and run it for a few more years and it still hold its value. So i have bought complete new suspension and done a few other things to it.

That being said... the truck is worth the money you would spend on the rebuilt motor + the warranty is always good. Used motors especially on some of our model trucks and the offroading and all people normally do with them could blow a rod or anything at anytime depending on how well it was maintained before. Maybe with a rebuilt motor you will be lucky and get 275k+ miles out of it like myself and many others have done.

I had 155k on mine when I threw a rod 6 months after I bought it. Luckly it didn't bust a hole in the block and run it for 6 months, thrown rod and all, before I had the money to rebuild it. 3 months and $3000 later I had it back up and running. I used all toyota parts in the rebuild and did and the work myself. But to answer your question, I would go with a rebuild engine

thanks guys for you input. being new, to owning a taco i just didn't if it was worth spending 4 grand more it being a 2000. you guys are right about getting a rebuilt. a company on ebay warrants it as long as you own the truck.

I have to muddy the water here by saying "it depends on who rebuilt it". If I had any assurance that the used one was OK then i would lean that way unless the rebuild company has a pretty good reputation.

I would go local honestly. Anybody on eBay can just delete their account at any time. At least local you can have somewhat peace of mind

Lotta truth there. If LCE rebuilt it, go for it. And as far as locals go, I've got an engine guy who has a full shop and is a Yota fanatic I'd trust for a rebuild.

I was in the same boat, rebuild or used? I just purchased a clean 2003 3.4L engine with 69k miles for $1200.00 out of a wrecked prerunner for my 04 tacoma 4x4. From what i've heard the rebuilds dont last as long because they are'nt built to toyota specs and they usually are'nt rebuilt with toyota internals.

I would go reman...I just had one done on my Nissan Altima, $3.6K installed, 3 year warranty-unlimited mileage. The car runs like a dream, this guy installed a reman engine on my jeep in 2002, still running and I have tried to kill the jeep a few times. I imagine a reman taco engine would even be better. If you are in W. PA, I can pass on this person's name

    My thoughts exactly.

On the contrary the trouble with used ones are unless you checked the odometer yourself in the donor vehicle you have no idea how many miles are really on the thing. I would be more apprehensive of motors that have already been pulled. Might be harder to find one but that is just the 2 cents.

i live in pensacola florida and everyone who owns a car here puts a lot of miles on their vehicle. so far none of the junk yards have come up with one with less than 100,000 miles and the ones over 100,000 are $1500-1800.

here are the sites if you have a minute to ck out and give me your opinion:

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/130859485881?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/200794619432?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649

all have great feedback, one is a year or 12000 miles, and one is lifetime as long as i own it.

    thanks again for your help.
