    Guys,

I've always seemed to have a wet spot on the seal between my T-Case and transmission. Last night I had the truck parked in the driveway and saw two nickel sized blobs of gear oil. It appears the oil is leaking from the bottom portion of the joint (I'll snap some pics later and post).

What is involved in fixing this issue. Here are some questions:

    1) It appears that the seal is actually just an RTV type of substance, no actual rubber/foam/paper gasket is present. Is this true?

    2) If it is an RTV type seal, what sealant should I use.

    3) Besides droping driveshafts and removing the cross-member are there any pitfalls to taking the T-case out? Should I be concerned with what gear it is in prior to removal, meshing issues etc?

    4) Anything else I should know?

    Thanks.

are you saying the transfer case has to come apart ?
There is a " how to " thread in the sticky section .
doesnt matter what gear the transfer case is in .
high heat RTV silicone should be used

    1) No. The transfer case must separate from the transmission.

    2) I looked. I even looked through the thread that has a compilation of "how to's" and none exist, not even how to remove transmission for clutch replacement...unless I missed it - I checked twice.

    3) Ok.

    4) Thanks.

Remove all that you need to access all the bolts, remove all the electrical connectors, separate from the trans, clean up the mating surfaces, and reseal with Ultra grey. Now just reverse the order. I did all this laying in the driveway.

I lost track thousands of dollars ago.
This ^ the T case is pretty easy to remove just make sure you apply a liberal amount of Ultra Grey to the mating surfaces.

Was a PreRunner, now it isn't
That void between the transmission and transfer case should be empty. It it's leaking into that space it could be the output seal on the trans.

Thanks for that. Interesting indeed. I will be sure to pick up that seal and extra gear lube.

^^This. Sealing the mating surfaces would just be a bandaid on a potentially bad situation. It should be bone dry inside the cavern that exists in there. I would be highly suspicious of the output seal of the transmission.

Of course, before removing the x-member, support the tranny with a jack stand. :D

What ended up being the verdict on this seal leak? T-case to transmission and the output seal need to be replaced? I have the same thing going on. Been monitoring it for awhile, not so much a 'leak', no drips on ground at all, but it is wet.

Not that I know the specifics of how this particular situation ended. I'm in the same boat.

It's either going to be a leaky Tranny output seal or a leaky TC input seal.

Ive checked both fluids for the past 2 years. And in my case I've never needed to top off gear oil... But the moment i do, I'm ordering both seals.

Yeah im with you on that.. although I do need to do a transmission flush and been curious if its worth doing a full flush at a dealer and having them do the seals at the same time, but im sure price will skyrocket at that point.

Input shaft seal is a common leak on 1st gens. That's my guess.

I've done that seal before. It can be done by yourself. Kind of a pain but not too bad.

    Too few to list.
Before even getting anything done, you should degrease that to see exactly where and what is leaking.
