My Taco was rear ended and the bed needs replacing.

I found a parts truck with a replacement bed.

Has anyone ever painted a bed by hand? (I'm on a budget)

    Here is my plan:

1 Lightly sand the replacement bed (gold color).

2 Get some white Rustoleum paint in a can. My truck is white.

3 Use those sponge type paint brushes to paint the bed

I had read about this on the internet, and evidently some people had good results with this.

My other option would be to leave the replacement bed in its original gold color and just live with it as is. My son thinks the paint would last longer this way.

The paint on my white truck is very good/excellent. The gold colored paint on the replacement bed is OK, but certainly not very good.

thanks in advance for your help

    Thanks for the input.

Not that I disagree, but from what I read, if you thin the paint down and use the sponge type brush I mentioned, evidently the brush streaks are not noticeable, ie the paint "flattens out"....if that makes sense.

The truck looked great before the wreck...only the bed, tailgate and bumper will be replaced.

So with the gold bed it would look kind of funky.

keep the character. someone will notice the brush strokes and if they dont and you will and if your like the rest of us you'll slowly start to regret it and it will eat at you. save some money and take it to maaco for some cheap paint job.

I have to say, I've seen some amazing results with Rustoleum in a can and a roller paint job.
I have a friend who's painted and old samurai blue, his diesel dually black, and a fox body mustang that caught fire white. All with Rustoleum and a roller, and all three cost ~$30 (two cans) and look way better than a Maico job.

The black seemed to smooth out the best. It seems to take forever to fully cure. It smelled like wet paint for about a week.

does turning tires to black wall out count? How bout added snug top rebel.
Look for a low budget paint shop, maaco or similar, let them paint your bed only, should be less than $300.
Or buy a spray gun and the correct paint from PPG or similar and learn how to spray on your own vehicle, the people that run the paint store can help guide you. Also the paint store employees will know who the best/worst painters in town are, and who could do it cheap and have a good result vs who can do it cheap and have a cheap result.
I know some guys locally that would charge $250 to prep and paint the bed.

Have Maaco paint the outside...(to keep costs down)

Put Herculiner (DIY kit) on the inside (install it yourself).

Unless I'm missing something, why are you not having the repair professionaly done anyway? You stated you were rear ended...ie. the insurance of the striking party would be in play here....:notsure:

Thanks for all the replies. For now I just decided to install the gold bed as is and maybe paint it, or have it painted, later.

The reason insurance is not involved is that I bought the truck about 6 months after it was wrecked.

If I were you I would get a roll-on bedliner kit for the bed. A white body with a black bed would look way better than a white body with a gold bed. Plus bedliner is textured so any application errors won't be very noticeable.
