What's up everyone? I was wondering if anyone has tried any hardcore pulling with there truck. The reason I ask is because I have a 15-20 ft pine tree that I want to cut down. I'm thinking about trying to pull the stump out with my truck. Any opinions +/- would be appreciated.

Do you have a hitch that you can tie your strap too? Or are you going to use the tow hooks up front and pull in reverse?

Its very Doubtfull the Taco can do it. I down (push down and not pull) 70-100 foot trees often with a backhoe and it brings the entire root bulb out. Its neat since there is no stump left behind. The approach requires massive amounts of torque (think Johnson-Bar kind of torque) You have to pull/push the tree at about 10 to 15 feet about the root bulb. Unlike a backhoe's bucket, a chain will snap the tree in half. Maintain sufficient distance so the tree does on end up on your rig. If the chain is at the root bulb you may not have sufficient torque to pull it out. Dont kill your transmission.

It's not a huge tree, but I suspect I'll tear up my lawn before the transmission. anyway I care about my truck too much to push it to that limit.

I was going to do the same thing, use the truck to yank a tree. Mentioned it to a friend of mine and he immediately jumped into me about using anything other than a heavy gauge chain to pull it out. Seems a friend of his used nylon tow straps to pull on a stump. The strap broke and came through the rear window causing massive brain injuries. Just food for thought.

And I thought nylon tow straps did not have any recoil.

Depends on the strap I think. A standard nylon strap should not have any recoil even under load, and even if it did there is not much to it. Then you have the nylon straps that have the frame hooks sewn onto the ends, now if they let go then you have a 2 lb hook coming at you.

The ones you really have to watch out for are the Dick Sepec (sp?) "off road recovery straps" They are somewhat elasticized (sp?) the theory behind that being you have the force of the elastic pulling as well as the force of the truck that is pulling, and so it is that much more force for free pulling on the stuck truck. Problem is, they are only rated for so many pulls or so many years, and like any rubberband left in the heat they are prone to fail. These are the ones that can come back on you and cause problems.

It was a team effort between me and my Taco, but I was successful. I have a couple of short videos, but I have no idea how to post them. If I can post them.
