I have had issues with my truck walking and tracking on its own for months now, i have replaced the rack bushings, had an alignment and still does it. So i have been thinking tie rod ends and they seem to be tight as well as all ball joints, today when i did the dry steer test with the bellows boots off i could here a clanking noise when i would turn the wheel back and forth. It seems to be play in the steering shafts inside the rack. Here is a video i found of it, this is not my vehicle but this is what it is doing. Is the rack toast. Oh and its leaking on the passenger side a little but not leaking out of boot. Just a little fluid on the shaft and inside the housing. The driver side shaft has like milky grease smeared on it. But hey, on to the clunking. http://youtu.be/0uB86ruIblE

Look like the rack will need to be replaced. You can try adjusting the preload.

I would just go aftermarket. My friends works at toyota and with his discount its still like over $500. I found a few online all around $300. Plus I'm still going to buy outer tie rod ends and bushings for my 04 tacoma. At least it lasted this long 172,000.
