I have a 2001 Tacoma 4X4 Double Cab with a 3.4 Liter engine (5VZ). I know I have an A340F automatic transmission, but I am wondering if any other years will work. My tranny is trashed. When I put it in gear, there is no movement, but it does grind near the rear of the transmission next to the transfer case. I have found good pricing on a few 98 and 99 A340F’s but I am wondering if they will swap.
Has anyone changed the transmission in a 2001 3.4 Tacoma with a transmission from a different year, besides 2002?
When looking for donors on car parts .com, the only years that show up are the 01 and 02’s.
The tag on the side of my transmission shows that it is a 30-40LE, Model #350003G110.

When looking for a rebuilt on the NAPA site, it lists a specific transmission for Model 35000-3G110. Will any other models work in this truck?

One difference that I have noticed is the two electrical connections on the drivers side of my transmission. I haven't seen them on other A340F's.

The 3G110 transmission was installed beginning in September of 2000 until September of 2002. From 2002 to 2004 the transmission was a 3G340.

I left off the leading 35000 from these part numbers. I just don't know if the different models will work with my TECM or what the different digits mean.

This would be a good question for Yotatech, me thinks.

Depending on state its sold in they can be "State Emissions Specific" Example : My truck was built for sale in Ca. & the A340F auto I have required replacement of same , meaning a used auto out of wrecking yard had to be the exact replacement out of another 2000 tacoma TRD 4x MADE FOR CA. Emissions, thats how far they've electronically/mechanically embedded the emissions for EPA in Ca. , its ridiculess, I mean another A340F may work but if passing smog is a consideration in your state this ain't gonna fly

Oh, & if you pull it yourself have fun with this bolt haha...

I have already purchased two 18" extensions for the "festivities" this weekend. Fortunately, I have an eighteen year old son who does not own a vehicle. I told him if he want to drive something, he has to get the transmission out. :) (Of course, I will supervise. The Taco is still mine.)

I just wish I had a garage floor to lay on. I plan on laying down a sheet of 3/4" plywood to keep the grass out of everything.

Too bad OP is farther inland. If you were closer to Ft Bragg, and had some army/AF friends, you could easily take your tacoma there and have every tool, lift, and mount needed to swap it out. It'd probably run you ~50 bux, but you'd have a full vehicle lift, transmission carrier, and everything else needed...

Was a PreRunner, now it isn't
Your 2001 should have a throttle kick down cable running from the throttle body to the trans on the driver's side. The 03 and 04 models don't have this as they use a throttle by wire setup and delete the kick down cable for electronics. I have a 99 4runner trans in my 02 Tacoma and it works just fine.

I do have the kick down cable. I have found a 2000 Tacoma tranny with less than 100k miles. I am going to go look at it on Friday. It's $950.00 with the transfer case. The garage that has it has already pulled it from a rollover truck. The issue I have found so far is the number of electrical connections on the 2001 compared to the older years seem to be different.

Here's a pic of the driver's side of my A340F. There are two electrical connectors tucked in behind the shift linkage.

I don't know if the older models have these or not.
