Is axle wrap hard on the u joints?
106,000 miles on a used truck I bought and I am thinking of replacing the u joints when I change the tranny filter and lube the slip yoke.

Anyone know the part number(s) for the U joints?

Never heard of axle wrap being hard on u-joints. Sounds like you should change them anyway as part of routine maintenance.

Call your local dealership for a part number.... Or shop around online. Here's a good place to start (where I buy my OEM parts from).

Yes, axle wrap can cause u-joint damage, but not under normal daily driving. Its mainly an issue when offroading (especially when rock-crawling over a tough obstacle), and putting an abnormally high torque in the driveline. The axle housing twists so much, that it puts the u-joint by the differential under too much angle, and it snaps. I've seen it happen.

Normal maintenance is just to lube them (with a grease gun) once or twice a year.

Mine didn't go until 180k or so.. Just grease them until they go, don't fix it if it ain't broke

Why do you need to replace the u-joint?

If that is directed at me, I was asking because I'd have the driveline out to lube the yoke and u joints are cheap.

x2 to what he said ^^

If the u-joints are tight, there's no need to replace them. If there is any play across the joint, then you need new ones. Yes, they are cheap but why spend the time and money on something that doesn't need replacing?
