I have a 1996 Tacoma 2wd extra cab 589,783 miles. In the last 2 weeks I have developed a strange idle problem that I can't figure out. It will run fine most of the time then sometimes at a stop the idle will just get really rough and die. I have changed plugs wires and cleaned the EGR valve. Ran seafoam in the intake crankcase and gas tank. Looking for ideas where to look next. Truck isn't throwing any codes either.

Checked your Mass Air Flow Sensor?

P.S. congrats on a half-a-million miles on that baby!

I just pulled it out and checked it. It doesn't look very dirty. Mine has just 2wires on it, not much can get dirty I would think

You'd be surprised on what can accumulate on those two wires. Plus they are very sensitive.

Buy some MAF cleaner and spray it real well. Don't touch the wires with the straw thing, obviously.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
With the truck idling tap the MAF sensor lightly with the handle of a screwdriver if the idle fluctuates you need a new MAF. I'd still go to the dealer and complain that your truck only has 589k and this is unacceptable. :D

Cleaned the mass air flow and she is running smooth again. Drove about 100 miles today without a problem. Thanks to the board for the great suggestions.
