My truck has 185,500 miles. I need to do my trans fluid.

Should I just empty and refill. Or do a full flush.. have heard horror stories about high mile full flushes..

    Don't flush.

Even if you screen, it's a bad idea. Gear bits and metal shavings rolling around in there from years of shifting have probably reintegrated into the transmission, meaning they're as integral as they were before they broke off.

When you flush, you push all those shavings out and either jam them up somewhere else they're not supposed to be or the transmission will slip more often without those pieces doing their job.

Drain. Refill. Done. If your tranny has accumulated a lot of this crap then you basically drive it till it's dead and buy a new or used one.

Yes, go to the dealers and get 4qts. of Toyota T-IV auto fluid a new drain gasket for the plug. Use only Toyota T-IV fluid not DEX III or others. I have same truck, drain pan plug is 10mm I think replace with new gasket about 12 ft/lbs. with torque wrench don't strip it. Pull out trans. stick in engine bay use funnel to pour in the new stuff slowly. the owners manual says it takes 2.1 liters but that's a misprint it will take all 4 qts. to fill a pan drain.
