I have a 2000 Tacoma 3.4L. My oil light keeps coming on and off/ flickering when I come to a stop at a light. I have tried adding oil and also full oil change, yet the it is still happening. I don't want to blow my engine up can anyone help?

Make sure you have the right amount first off (not under/over filled) Unless the idle is extremely low ( not likely to happen this way) causing it to flicker, you better check to see how much pressure your oil pump is providing, how many miles on engine ?? You may have excessive clearance issues with engine bearings if this motor has been run hard for an extended time with little or no maintenance...

To check pressure you would need to get a fitting that goes where oil pressure sensor is on block that both sensor and a gauge can be put on. Or take to a dealer for them to diagnose. This could get expensive though.....

I know I'm in college so money is extremely tight. i already price an oil pump and its $156 so I'm not sure if i should wait till i can afford a tow truck to get it home for my dad and I to work on it.

Well, before you start rebuilding &/or buying parts you may not need, see if you can start by checking for loose/& or bad LED in your dash, just checking some things that just takes a few minutes & doesn't cost a dime $$

Possible causes for low pressure warning light coming on:

    • bad oil pressure sensor
    • poor connection at oil pressure sensor
    • low/incorrect oil level
    • incorrect viscosity of oil
    • old oil (past oil change date/mileage)
    • worn internal engine parts (bearings, etc)
    • bad oil pump
    • oil pump pickup seal bad (VERY rare, but does happen)
    • oil pickup clogged

I wonder if using a scan gauge or scan tool that allows you to read pressure through the obd 2 port.

According to the wiring specs the sensor is simply an on/off type. It does not actually measure pressure specifics. The switch simply closes when a specific pressure is reached. (Usually around 5-7 psi)

Hi, I have a Tacoma 1996. The oil pump has some issues, there is low pressure when is below 2000 rpm. When there is above 2000 rpm the pressure is fine (no low pressure). I have replaced the pressure valve of the oil pump, the sieve or filter is fine and I replaced the gear of the oil pump as well but I still having low pressure below 2000 rpm. I will appreciate your advise and support to find a solution on the issue of low pressure when is below 2000 rpm,
    Thank you
