My nerf bars began to get some surface rust on them and I decided to clean them up and coat them with DupliColor's spray on truck bed coating rather than just repaint them. I figure it would be a tougher finish and look nicer as well. I purchased all the supplies from AutoZone for about $20.

    Supplies:

    (Before) Surface Rust

Once I sanded and scraped off the powder coating it revealed a lot more rust than I thought was there. (Note: A BBQ grill brush w/ scraper on the back works great)

Once scraped down and sanded, I sprayed the bars down w/ Rust Converter. It's supposed to inhibit further corosion and turns the rust spots into a hard sandable, paintable primer. It sprays on clear and the rust spots turn black while the painted areas turn a hazy white color.

I'm not sure how the bedliner spray will stick to chrome... I don't know if you would need to do some additional prep work on them other than scuffing up the chrome real good so the bedliner will stick to it. I'm spraying mine tommorow if it's warm enough out (damn I wish I had a garage here) I'll post the pics as soon as I'm done of the final product.

with chrome you may need to sand blast them with just a liittle sand blaster. even if you sand the chrome it wil not last, exspecially the abuse the nerf bars take...
