Hi all, I just replaced my timing belt on my 3.4 and everything seems fine but I would like some piece of mind because I did something wrong and I want to know if it will be OK or do I need to redo. I had all my timing marks on the pulleys (crank shaft sprocket and cam pulleys) lined up to their marks like they are supposed to be when I installed the new belt. What I evidently did wrong was when I put the new belt on I had the "left" and "right" cam marks on the belt installed on the wrong cam pulleys with the arrows on the belt pointing towards the cam pulleys. My question is do I need to tear it back down to swap this or will it be fine. It seems to run fine but I have only ran it around the block? I hope that made sene. Thanks in advance.

You are saying the belt has a direction it wants to rotate? If so and you have it on backwards, I would swap. If that is the case and they built the belt to take the force in one direction, you dont want your belt prematurely wearing out or worse, snapping.

I doubt the new belt cares which way it rotates but a used belt probably would. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong on that. I had all the timing marks lined up when I installed the new belt and when I manually rotated the engine over twice they all lined up again. But you are right the belt is on backwards according the timing marks on the belt. I just want to make sure it will be fine that way. Thanks

You should be fine. The marks are the same distance apart, either way around, and that is all the marks try to indicate.
But I am no expert, just my honest opinion....:)

If there is a directional arrow imprinted on the belt, then for longevity, it should be corrected. I can't swear to it on the Tacoma 3.4, but on several other vehicles I have done timing belts on, the belt has a microscopic taper to it that helps it stay straight on the pulleys. If mounted backwards the word was that it would try to slowly "walk" towards the timing cover, eventually rubbing on it. According to the information I have learned over the years, the word is if the belt has a direction of rotation mark on it, then it has this taper. I can't swear to it on the 3.4 though.

I don't think these arrows that OP are talking about are directional arrows. They are arrows that are perpendicular to the belt that are supposed to line up with the top of the pullys to make sure both sides are in sync.

You are probably right, but I just wanted to give the additional information just in case.

Exactly, I have the arrows on the belt pointing toward the timing marks on the back of the timing cover (towards the engine block) instead of pointing out. Thanks guys for your replies.

That is fine then. I was referring to the arrows that are on some timing belts showing direction of rotation. If you didn't have those, then you should be fine.
