Bought my truck a few years ago, and only whines when the clutch is RELEASED. Like a monotone frequency. When you push the clutch in, the noise slows down to nothing. Soon as you let it out, its back. I have been told whining like this may be a bearing in the transmission, not a clutch issue. Has anyone heard the same thing? If you fixed it, how?

I see people complain about the input shaft bearing, the little one that comes in a clutch/PP/alignment kit? Thats the only input shaft bearing I can find that could possibly be making that noise.

Most likely you have a release bearing (AKA throw-out bearing) that is giving you an issue. The input shaft bearing is the bearing that is located inside the front of the transmission itself, and requires you to disassemble part of the transmission itself. Release bearings are interesting as I have seen them make a whine noise when the pedal is depressed, as well as see them only make a noise when it is released. There is also a TSB for the release bearing sleeve on some of the Tacoma trucks. A quick search will help you find the many threads on that.

My truck is the 5 speed, all the TSBs I see are for the newer 6 speed.

Glad you found the information. To be honest I don't see that bulletin often, I just knew it was a possibility. I stand by my belief that you have a release bearing that is failing.
