I have a 2002 Toyota Tacoma SR5 Prerunner 2wd with the 2.7 liter L4 engine. It sits up just as high as the 4wd's. I was wondering what size the rear end is if someone can give me feed back on it. Is it a 7.5", 8", or 8.4"??? I wanna know because I plan on regearing in the future to 4:56 gears

If you have the TRD package with the e-locker, then you have the old 8" rear diff thats been around since 1988 (4.10 gears).

Otherwise, you have whats known as the 8.4" diff (that actually has an 8" ring gear).

    What is your axle code?

:gossip: even if he has the TRD package he doesn't have the e-locker (factory) because he has the 4cyl

The 2.7 (3rz) has the 8.4 rear diff, the 2.4 (2rz) has the 7.5 rear diff.

Depending on your axle code you may already have 4.56 gears.

This ^^^^ A lot of 1st gens with the 2.7L and an auto came geared from toyota with 4.56s

You are correct but not for the reason you listed. The OP has an 8.4" diff because his truck came with the 4 cyl. and an auto. The TRD in this configuration did not get an e-locker... so no 8" diff.

To set the record straight. '02 trucks equipped with the TRD package with the 5 speed manual and the 2.7L included the TRD e-locker.
