Hello, Does anyone know if a 2nd gen 3rd member will work in a 1st gen? I have the whole axle housing drum to drum with 3rd member if that bolts up then sweet!! but if not can the 3rd member just be swapped??

I'm seeking help with helping someone to buy my complete assembled rear axles from drum to drum with 3rd member. What I'm selling is off a 05' prerunner 2wd. The only person I've had try to buy it off me in 6 months is someone with a 99' prerunner 2wd. naturally! So i tried to search for the answer but it tricky. I need some help!! I want this thing gone. lol. Thanks guys.

Some of this Some of that
Assuming they are both six lug axles yes, also e locker and non e locker thirds are different, but if they are regular diffs then they are toyota 8.4's and are interchangeable

The 3rd member bolt pattern and separation are different between the 1st and 2nd gen Tacoma. You can't swap them between trucks. As for the entire assembly, As I recall the mounting pad locations are different between the two as well. The 2nd gen is slightly wider. A friend of mine and I had actually looked at this before and did the research.

Both have the t100 axle. 1996+ tacoma. T100 trucks and 1st tundras all share the same axle but different length All 3rds are interchangeable. Except for elocker truck. Example is: I have a 3rd from a 2004 tundra in my truck as an example.

    Here is a great resource.

    False.

T100/1st gen tundra axles are 3" wider per side then 1st gen tacoma

    T100/1st gen tundra = 66"
    2nd gen tacoma = 65"
    1st gen tacoma = 60"

But the 8.4" diff is the same across all those axles..never heard of the 2nd gen tacomas having a different mounting pattern..

E locker only in 1/2 gen tacomas(and3/4th gen 4runners). Also never heard of a different mounting..

It WILL fit. However, the gear ration is going to be off by a lot. I would let him know about that before you drive it over.
