    Hi,
I took my 95 tacoma v6 in for smog and it failed because the timing was off. I took it to get fixed and they said it has no distributor so it is not adjustable. They implied that that the first technician was mistaken because it can't be off. Anyone have any advice? I'm selling tomorrow and want to ensure deal goes through.

The timing belt could be off a tooth, but that'd be a fair amount off. No CEL or unusual driving behavior?

If the belt were a tooth off, it would be running horribly if at all. My guess is that smog tech didn't know how to check the timing properly. Is there another smog shop nearby (preferably a pass or don't pay type)? I believe you're allowed 2 degrees plus or minus on the timing which should allow for normal component wear but I'd be surprised if it were out of that range.

You don't check timing on a 3.4, but if yours has a 3.0 then it has a distributor and you can adjust the timing.

Well, I went back and explained that it has no distributor and that the timing is done electronically. He had no idea what to do and finally just gave it to us as a pass.
