I have a 2001 2.4 liter 2wd with the automatic transmission. The door sill sticker says it is a A44D transmission as you can see in the first pic. I believe this transmission was used 2001-2004 and maybe 2000.

I bought the shop manuals. Pic 2. Open the cover and it says the automatic transmission manual has a publication number of RM387U, for a A43D transmission. Pic 3. Only I have a A44D transmission. I thought this was a typo by Toyota

But then I flipped through the shop manual and there is a small section for the A44D transmission I have, which says that if you need more info to refer to the A43D transmission manual with a publication number of RM387U. Pics 4 and 5. So it does not look like there is a typo unless it was repeated more than once.

On the Toyota website it also says I need publication number RM387 for the A43D transmission, despite the fact I have a A44D transmission. Pic 6.

Wiki says that I should have the A43D but I believe this is a mistake. Wiki also says the A44D was use on the 1989-1991 4Runner.

Does anyone have the transmission manual for a 2001-2004?

I have a 2004 Tacoma 2.4L - A44D - and the hard copy factory service manual. Yes - this is confusing. You have an A44D as indicated in the lower right hand corner of the tag in the drivers side door. The A44D has a 14 bolt pan. The A340E/A340F have a 19 bolt pan. The later were used on the 2.7 engine if I'm not mistaken.

Here's my take on the ref. to the A43D in the publication you have. All of this is based on a lot of WEB research. I see this also in the 2003/2004 FSMs.

The A43D and A44D are in many respects the same "mechanically". The A43D performs shift control by way of the throttle plate position. The A44D uses electronic control to accomplish shifting.

Also - transmission filters. Many dealer parts people have told me these vehicles(and other modern Toyotas) use a mesh type filter that is washable and reusable. Look online for a filter for a 2004 Tacoma with a 2.4 liter engine and you will see the same type of filter that's available in just about any car. Metal housing with a fiber content to strain the fluid. This type of filter would hardly be washable/reusable?

Also - the filters for the A44D/A340E/A340F are different.

    A44D - 5 BOLT FILTER
    A340E - 3 BOLT FILTER
    A340F - 4 BOLT FILTER

For a 2004(and maybe 2001-2003) with a 2.4l engine- AutoZone appears to be one of the few with the correct filter for a 14 bolt pan. I'm basing this on my locale where the major mass marketers are AZ, O'Reilley's; Advance Auto Parts. Some of you have those and other options. All of the ones I see online for a 19 bolt pan are for the A340F. I have not seen one for the A340E.

Not only are the Toyota's parts people confused, but so are the online transmission providers. Many show the 2001-2004 Tacoma as being equipped with an A43D. Again, the tag on the door tells the story as well as the pan bolt count.

In this forums sticky you will find electronic FSMs for 2001-2004 Tacoma's. 39 meg zip file. The manual is actually a 2003 Tacoma FSM. The "online" version is incomplete. Use the downloadable version to get the entire FSM.

This post is old so I will update.

I found RM387U on ebay. Seller had 2 of them. I bought the last one. But what he send me was RM327U. When I contacted the seller he said he made a mistake in the listing as he only had 1 RM387U which had already been shipped to the first buyer. I then went back on ebay and found and bought RM387U. So now I have 2 manuals.

The are both the same as far as I can tell, but notice that the image of the transmission on the covers is different. One manual has 1993 at the top and the other does not, but has Nov. 1993 near the bottom. One was printed in Oct. 1992 and the other in Nov. 1993.

Again, as far as I can tell from glancing through the pages, both manuals are the same inside. I did study and compare the 3 pages of specifications in both manuals and they are identical. Both are for the A43D transmission but I guess there is so little difference with the A44D that it does not matter.

Wow Lester, what a great, detailed reply you offered, very helpful of you!

& if those expensive *SS manuals are really that similar than screw Toyota, those money hungry extortionists!

Not sure if you've ever read this comment after nearly a decade but thanks for the input. Your the freaking bomb! This information really helps solve the problems am having with my 2001 2WD Toyota Tacoma that has an A44D transmission. I believe the neutral switch is toast and I was having trouble finding out the correct part number to order a replacement and how to install in. That link to the manual saved me so much hassle.
