Question....as I have searched with different results, so I am hoping to get a little insight.

Would the rear axles from a 2000 4runner none locker be the same width as my 2004 Tacoma? Essentially interchangeable. From what I am gathering I'm leading to the answer of yes, but not 100% certain.

I pulled the Dorman part # (630-500) for a 2000 4Runner and cross referenced with Amazon (RockAuto doesn't show an axle shaft for a 2004 Tacoma). Amazon says it doesn't fit a Tacoma - Amazon lists OE part number 42311 35400 for that Dorman part.

I show these parts from Toyota for an 04 Tacoma:
42311-35390 AXLE SHAFTS $475.32 $356.49 Add to Cart
    TACOMA; 2WD; 6 CYLINDER; W/ABS; W/O PRERUNNER
    3 42311-35350 AXLE SHAFTS $475.32 $356.49 Add to Cart
    TACOMA; 2WD; 6 CYLINDER; W/ABS; W/PRERUNNER

    And these parts for a 2000 4Runner:
    3 42311-35210 AXLE SHAFTS $329.69 $247.27 Add to Cart
    4-RUNNER; ALL; W/16 WHEEL; W/O ABS
    3 42311-35220 AXLE SHAFTS $332.61 $249.46 Add to Cart
    4-RUNNER; ALL; W/O 16 WHEEL; ALL; 6 CYLINDER
    3 42311-35280 AXLE SHAFTS $325.64 $244.23 Add to Cart
    4-RUNNER; ALL; W/16 WHEEL; W/ABS

    Hope that helps a little!

Not sure if it matters but a good buddy of mine has had nothing but problems with his 2000 4runner rear keeps blowing axle seals... could be a one off problem but.. his mechanoc who has fabd up loys of trail rigs said its a known problem with the axle.. might want to look into it before dropping the cash.

It has to do with the flex in the axle that if you want to wheel it it needs reinforcement. ..

But this is all hear say.

The only thing that is different about the rear axles in Tacoma's and 4Runner's is how they are attached to the vehicle. 4runners are coil over and Tacoma leaf sprung. If you are looking for a parts axle, it might work. The only other thing I would worry about is if the donor axle is ABS or not, and if your truck is ABS or not.I want to say that you can run an ABS axle shaft in a NON ABS axle, but not the other way around. I dont know if E-locker axle shafts will work in NON E-locker axles. or vis-versa. I would think not, but dont know...
As far as axles with different widths, the Solid axle trucks (79-85) are narrower than IFS (86-95) and the (95-04)Tacoma, and 3rd gen (96-02) 4runners is wider than the old pickups (86-95)

I won't be using the differential housing though. Just axle shafts. And the donor has ABS. But for now I'm replacing the bearings tmw on both sides. Should be a fun day in -30!
