So the other day my brakes started to squeal while I hit the brakes so I brought it home to check it out. Took the tire off to realize I needed brakes, no big deal. So as I'm putting my factory rims on I put all the lugs on and started to tighten them. They all got snugged down with an impact like I always do. ( I have a winter set and a summer set of tires.) they all got snug so I let the truck down to torque the lugs to 115 foot lbs. before I even got them remotely tight one snapped!? I've never snapped a lug before. So now today I'm doing brakes on my truck got everything done and the same damn thing happened!! I snapped another lug. I can't believe it I snapped two of them in two different days. Replaced one with factory ones from Toyota. I know how to change a tire I've done plenty as I worked as a mechanic for a construction company. Any reason this could be happening?

I believe 83ft-lbs is the torque spec. That may be the reason they're snapping. ;)

Hmmm can anyone else verify this? But it's weird it wasn't like it was over tight than snapped. I was just getting started to torque them. So if it was like I was cranking on it than snapped it would make since.

And I've had them at 115 for about 3 years. I change my tires twice a year and rotate them every 5k miles. So it just seems odd

83 lb ft of torque is the spec.

    Bolts get old and break.

    They age faster when overtorqued.

    Too few to list.
Toyota studs are the only ones I've snapped on 2 models. Never snapped any other manufacturer studs and I've had many cars.

Shit. Guess they are way to tight. That explains everything!

Most likely whoever put them on before you over torqued them as well.

Since I've owned the truck since 60k it's all on me. That's what I get for listening to the dealer. Called about torque specs the first time I changed my rims and tires. So now that I realized they are over tight do I change them all or change them as they snap

 You overtorqued the wheel studs by almost 40%.

Replace them all. Would rather not see a wheel fall off when you are going fast around a corner.

Yeah, fatigue over time. I have five exhaust studs Time-Sert'ed in my MR2 because of repeated overtorquing, stripped the (aluminum) threads in the head. They won't strip now (and I torque them properly now, heh).

Good thing OP doesn't drive a Subaru - wheel studs are torqued to just 72 ft-lbs.

Some of this Some of that
Probly 99% of dealerships use impact guns with torque sticks improperly, so everyone's lug nuts are most likely getting over tightened.. Even if a little bit. I'd replace all the studs just to be safe!
