hey all, i have a 02 with almost 80k miles on it and the throwout bearing is making that whining sound is that normally how long a clutch will last?, or is that something i have to replace or can it just be adjusted or something so it wont make that dang noise at every light. also if i change my throwout bearing should i just go ahead and do the whole clutch? thanks in advance!!!

I would do the whole clutch while it's apart. If you buy an aftermarket clutch kit, make sure to buy an OEM Toyota throwout bearing - do not use the one that comes with the kit.

Mine had a slight whine to it. I finally replaced my clutch at 191xxx miles. I replaced mine with a Marlin Crawler heavy duty and I have been very pleased with it.

so the noise occurs when im stopped in first gear at a light or whatever and i take off from first while the clutch is releasing it makes that whining noise until i let the clutch completely out, then its fine, the clutch feels good though and dosnt seem to be slipping or anything,

how much was a clutch running you guys compared to just a throwout bearing?

What everyone is trying to say here is that based on the labor involved, if you are going to do all that work to get to the throw out bearing it doesn't make since not to replace the Clutch at the same time.

its just bugging me lol but if i feather the clutch it doesn't do it, its just an annoying sound.. also i dont know if this makes a difference but when i start the truck it seems like after it warms up a bit i get this weird smell that usually lasts maybe 5 mins then goes away would that have something to do with the clutch aswell??

Clutches, especially on Toyotas, usually last longer than 80k. My brother had a 96 Tacoma and he put 275k on the original clutch. I also have an uncle with a Nissan hardbody that currently has 367k on the original clutch. This is also true for throwout bearings usually. They usually last a bit more than 80k. Of course, mileage doesn't say much if you only do 5 shifts a day.

Even I, being a conservative person, would beat you over the head for not replacing the clutch while it's in your face like that. It is the exact same pain in the ass to replace the clutch as it is to do the throwout bearing. Shops usually charge something like $800 for a clutch job I think? If you're doing the job yourself, trust me, you don't want to have to do it twice. Also, even if the clutch material has not worn down significantly, I would assume that at least the pressure plate would have lost some of it's springy nature over 12 years.

That Crawlin Merlin clutch or whatever seems decent, but you can get them for a whole lot less than $300. Rockauto has clutch kits starting at $130

The marlin crawler is a bit expensive compared to others. However I would question the quality and durability. Many people on here including myself run the clutch and have been pleased with it.

thanks for the info man, so it would be about 1000 for a clutch at a shop? ive never changed one so im hesitant on doing it myself.. is that 1000 in labor or 1000 with everything?

I think I paid $330 in labor to have a clutch installed on my Corolla before I was doing stuff like that myself. Figure $200 clutch kit, $50 fluids, $40 flywheel resurface, and maybe 4-6 hours of labor?

I've got a shop here that charges $59/hr, but for a grand I'd offer to do it myself. :p

No come as a complete kit. Everything you need. It uses OEM bearings. New clutch disc, pressure plate, throwout (release) bearing and new pilot bearing. I also went ahead and replaced the flywheel as well. You can have your old one resurfaced but it was going to cost me about the same as to buy a new one. Took me and my brother at his shop about 5.5 hrs.

    Clutch Kit - $300
    Pressure Plate bolts - $8
    Shipping about $30
    New flywheel - $75
New flywheel bolts from Toyota - $15
New pivot for fork from Toyota - $15

    Total - $443

I also bought a couple cans of brake cleaner to clean everything with. Loctite was needed for the flywheel bolts, Paper towels, and of course lunch. I helped my brother out it all in so labor was not factored in other than lunch.

just looked and the v6 model is out of stock. I ordered a kit last year and it laid in my floor for almost a year before my finally took a dump and would barely pull.

I needed the marlin kit for my project taco, if they could've given me eta i might have waited for it to become available. I've read nothing but good things about the marlin kit. I'm happy with the stock replacement aisin kit. I had a aisin kit in my 93 toyota p/u and it performed great with no issues.
