I recently discovered that my Charcoal Canister is making a buzzing noise every couple minutes or so. If I remove the the hose I circled in the attachment, the buzzing stops. Also I need to replace those hoses because they're getting cracked. Any idea what's causing the noise?

I more recently (on Xmas night) ran out of gas. My truck hasn't been the same since. It cold starts fine but idles really low when warm. It's stalled out on me four times already. Fortunately all occurred at low speeds. I replaced the fuel filter, to no avail. I have tried fuel system cleaner too. What else do I need to do to fix my fuel system? or stop it from stalling and idling rough?

    Thanks!

Very common on all 1st gens. Toyota designed an add on fix for it years ago but has since been discontinued. Another thing you can do is open the gas cap and relieve the pressure.

Your idle problem is probably gonna be from those cracked vacuum lines.

Thanks for the responses Fyremanpat, and Muddedtaco. I'm going to replace my vacuum lines asap, and get my fuel system cleaned out locally for about $130. I'd say it's not a bad idea, even if it doesn't change anything. Especially since my Taco has about 200k on it.

I'm also experiencing a lack of power and intermittent spurts of power, could this be related?

So what is the actual issue? Is the carbon canister clogged? Can this not be something that can be remedied at the source? I also have the 10 second interval buzz/tone and I would like to fix it, not band-aid it. It can be heard from inside the house.

I also hear a noise coming from my charcoal canister but it is very quiet and i have to almost put my ear against it after I turn the engine off to hear it. I have the V6 and a CEL comes on intermittently (P0450) stating a bad vapor pressure sensor. My hoses appear to be ok but pinholes can be a pain to locate. I've replaced the gas cap, and normally keep a clean running truck (though Im overdue on my timing belt and dont care based off other's comments about the belt lasting forever and it being an non-interferrence engine-- ill replace when i buy a house with a garage.)

I'll refer to the FSM and test various componets linked to the charcoal canister and let you know if anything turns up bad.

So I've had the truck for a while now, and it still makes the noise occasionally. I've just gotten used to it since it seems to be a normal issue. It doesn't affect anything on the performance side, so I'm not concerned about it. Although yes, it can be obnoxious.

I've since had my fuel system cleaned and replaced my fuel filter and injectors with OEM parts, as well as all the vacuum hoses I could get my hands on without taking my throttle body off. I've also had my ECT sensor replaced. The symptoms I had when I made this thread are gone.

The problem was inertia of the air in the line. It could cause a check valve in the canister to flutter or chatter. The "fix" was to add a little box between the line and the canister to smooth the air flow. Later models got it from the factory and are silent.
In the pic below (a 99) see the "box" at the tail end of the yellow arrow, not the point.

I see! Yea, mine definitely doesn't have that box. As long as it's not going to interfere with my trucks reliability, I'm not going to replace my charcoal canister. Seems like too much work and $$$ for an issue with no symptoms other than the sound it makes.

could that also possibly be causing my CEL to light up?

I do not have the little box as mine is a 2001 taco DC. 3.4l. my CEL is on with the codes 420 (ha! :rasta:), 441, and 446.

I noticed a sound coming from this area of the evap cannister too on my 2001 V6 4X4 Tacoma..
Here is a quick video I took:

When I tapped it does go away but it also seems to come back for a bit.... keys are out of the ignition and its way to cold for an insect so is this what everyone is referring to and should I be worried?

I haven't seen any issues with my performance or any CEL on but an ounce of prevention is never a bad idea.

    regards,

    - Yrmzzi

mine does this too. Couldn’t really gather anything from the rest of the thread. No CEL, just curious what the sound is. Sounds more like an electrical hum to me than air flow but I could be wrong.
