    Started automatic. Swapped to manual
Had 97 4-runner with 6 cyl and auto trans. Had to run with ect button on full time for any decent performance. Great snow vehicle though.

They had a lot of trouble with their Radiators. The Transmission fluid would mix with the Coolant and wreck the transmission. Pay special attention to the transmission fluid and check if the vehicle has a new radiator. If it has a new radiator either the old one got corroded with possible transmission damage or it was changed as a preventive measure.

If it hasn't been changed, don't let that scare you. There is a TON of info on the dreaded "pink milkshake" and what steps to take to prevent it…..

So what causes this? just wear over time or the environment its in, ie. snow ice salt, for the lines to corrode. This is the first of me hearing it. What are some signs to look for when looking at a 4runner. Going to look at one before lunch so any and all input is great. thanks guys.

Check coolant and transmission fluid. New? Clean? Radiator new? Service records? Timing belt due at 90,000. All in all good vehicles. 5 spd are awesome, auto's ok. Turn off ect button for more power. Great in 4wd. Check for rusted frame. Easy to lift with 2" lift springs or spacer kit. Good luck.

The coolant and trans fluid use the same radiator and the internal wall can fail and cause them to mix. Coolant will trash the trans. Read the strawberry milkshake thread.
